Paedophile assaulted boys for 25 years

A FORMER manager of a children's home who admitted carrying out dozens of sex attacks on boys in his care was jailed yesterday for 15 years.

David Murphy, 69, assaulted 18 boys over 25 years while he was running St Margaret's Children's Home in Elie, Fife. He admitted a total of 30 offences dating back to 1960 and was told by Lord Hardie that the damage he had caused to his victims could not be overstated.

Many of them were at the High Court in Glasgow for the sentence. The judge added: "Your victims were children who required help, but instead you abused your position of trust to inflict damage on them over a period between 1960 and 1986."

One of the boys he attacked, Jamie Murphy, now 48 and a grandfather, said: "Seeing Murphy finally going to jail draws this chapter to an end, and helps our healing. I was abused from the age of seven to 15, and all of our lives have been ruined by him."

Mark Stewart, defending, said the jail term amounted to a life sentence because of his client's age and ill health.
