Leslie Jones returns to Twitter after racist harassment

After enduring racist and sexist Twitter attacks following the release of Ghostbusters, Leslie Jones is signing back on.

“Welp… a bitch thought she could stay away,” Jones tweeted. “But who else is gonna live tweet Game of Thrones!!”

Earlier this week, Jones became the target of a barrage of hateful, offensive tweets, and the comedian took screenshots and shared some of the abusive messages, encouraging her followers to help her report the trolls.

“I feel like I’m in a personal hell,” she tweeted at the time. “I didn’t do anything to deserve this. It’s just too much. It shouldn’t be like this. So hurt right now.”

Countless fans and friends took to Twitter to voice their support for Jones, using the hashtag #LoveforLeslieJ to send her positive messages. (Supporters included Ghostbusters director Paul Feig, Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, John Boyega, James Corden, Elizabeth Banks, Viola Davis, and Shonda Rhimes.)

Eventually, however, Jones signed off, writing, “I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the s— I got today… wrong.”

The new Ghostbusters movie has been the target of hateful comments ever since the project was first announced, but of the new ghostbusting team — Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon — Jones is the only one who is active on social media. In the past, the Saturday Night Live star has used her Twitter account to frequently (and hilariously) live tweet shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. (Who else would refer to Mace Tyrell as a “decorated salt shaker”?)

After Jones announced her return, the official Twitter account reached out to welcome her back.
