After making my own Lush-inspired bubble bars, I wanted to try out making other Lush products. I found a bunch of Pinterest pins on how to make DIY bath bombs, so I tried it out and it turned out great! It was super easy and really cool to customize the colors and scents with different essential oils.

I made a few batches of these bath bombs and I think I’ve found the best recipe out of all the different ones out there & I have some tips to help your bath bombs turn out great the first time!

Here’s everything you’ll need to make your own Lush-inspired bath bombs:

Ingredients

Once you have all of your ingredients, this DIY project is super easy and fun. After making a few batches of these Lush-inspired bath bombs, this is the best recipe I’ve figured out:

Sift the dry ingredients and whisk together.

Mix your wet ingredients together.

Mixing your wet ingredients is where you can get really creative with your bath bombs — I did a few different batches with different scents. My favorite essential oil combinations are:

I used bergamot essential oil in my DIY Lush Bubble Bars and it smelled amazing! If you want your batch of bath bombs to all be the same color, this is where you will also add your food coloring. If you want to do multi-colored bath bombs — do not add any food coloring in this step.

Combine your wet & dry ingredients (slowly!)

See how the blue bath bomb on the left turned out kind of “bumpy” and the rainbow bath bomb on the right is smooth? Don’t mix in your wet ingredients too quickly or your mixture will react and expand, creating the bumpy texture.

It’s super important that you do not add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients too fast or the dry ingredients will react and mess up/ruin your bath bombs.

For my first batch, I poured the wet ingredients in too quickly without mixing fast enough & my mixture totally started fizzing and it kind of messed up my first batch.

So, TIP: pour a few drops of liquid into the dry ingredients and quickly whisk or mix with your hands to incorporate the liquid with out allowing the mixture to react to the dry ingredients. Once the liquid is mixed in, add a few more drops of liquid & repeat this process until your liquid is incorporated and the mixture is the consistency of wet sand.

Separate your mixture & add food coloring (optional)

This part is optional but if you want your bath bombs to be multi-colored, you will need to separate the mixture into different bowls & just add the food coloring to each bowl & mix until fully incorporated. I made some rainbow bath bombs with this batch. TIP: use a glove to avoid staining your hands with the food coloring & to help you fully incorporate the color.

Mold your bath bombsMuffinChanel DIY Bath Bomb LUSH recipe essential oils bath bombs molds ingredients sex bomb the experimenter demo diy extra

I bought a silicone mold and an actual stainless steel mold for my bath bombs. You can use any kind of mold — cookie cutter, cupcake baking pan, plastic easter egg — really anything. I chose the stainless steel mold because I heard that the plastic ornament molds break when trying to remove the bath bomb or just after a few uses & I knew that I’d get a lot of use out of a stainless steel mold that wasn’t going to crack on me.

I didn’t really like how the silicone mold worked for me at first. You will need to leave the bath bomb in the mold to harden before trying to remove it otherwise it will just crumble apart as you loosen the mold. I finally got one to take & then I sprinkled the luster dust on top to try to make it cuter — it just wasn’t working for me :/  I’m going to keep working with the silicone one until I get a little better at it because I really like the variety and cute shapes that it has. *Tips for using the silicone molds 1) pack in the bath bomb mixture firmly and 2) let the bath bomb dry in the mold.

TIP: place parchment paper or any kind of covering to protect your surface when working. I had a lot of fall out when packing my bath bombs.

To mold your bath bombs, just press in the mixture into your mold — you don’t need to go crazy packing it in, but a firm press is perfect. To make my rainbow bath bomb batch, I just layered in the colors in each half of my stainless steel mold.

Once each half of the mold is filled, you want to add more of the mixture to kind of over flow the mold. You’ll need extra to help your bath bomb halves to stick together.

Press your bath bomb mold firmly together — you really want everything to be packed together.

Remove your bath bomb from the mold

Tap your bath bomb mold lightly to loosen the bath bomb from the mold.

And that’s it! You have beautiful and fragrant bath bombs that are super fun and easy to make! Remove from the molds and set out to dry for at least 24 hours. I actually didn’t even touch mine until maybe 72 hours. They harden up like the Lush ones and then they’re ready to pop in the bath! At this point, you can add the gold luster dust for extra shine and fun for your bath.

The stainless steel mold that I used creates bath bombs that are smaller than the ones you buy at Lush — these are more the size of the Pink Bath Bomb. With the recipe I used and the stainless steel mold, I was able to make 4 bath bombs per batch. Here’s some of the other bath bombs I made:
