The Masterminds

Rate this book
From prisons and reality TV to mansions and safe houses, THE MASTERMINDS revisits THE MASTERPIECERS and closes the twins’ story. It is a tale of imperfect love and imperfect people.

The only downside to Joshua Cooper’s investigation of a mob runner is not being able to discuss it with his two best friends, nineteen-year-old twins, Aster and Ivy Redd. However, when Ivy sells one of her quilts to the mob runner, and Aster hits him with her car in a motel parking lot, they become entangled in his investigation. The FBI even believes the twins could knowingly be involved with the mob. Joshua will do everything he can to disprove their suspicion and nail the true criminal.

Brook Jackson is a judge on the Masterpiecers’s art competition. That is his official job; his unofficial job is running questionable errands against easy cash. But a ripped quilt and the girl who sewed it will make Brook’s life and heart spiral out of control.

Accused of money laundering, Brook becomes the fall guy. After three weeks of imprisonment, he cuts a deal with Joshua: his freedom for the real felons and a meeting with Ivy. Although eager to clear his name, Brook wants to win Ivy’s forgiveness—and if she’s willing to give it to him—her love.

After the ending of The Masterpiecers, I’ve been dying to read this book. I loved this book more than the previous book. So good! If you have liked The Masterpiecers, you need to read this book! I went in blind and the first surprise was that the book isn’t told from the Redd sisters’ (Ivy and Aster) pov, but from Brook and Josh’s pov.

Brook is part of the tv show ‘The Masterpiecers’. I remember that while reading The Masterpiecers, I was constantly wondering if Brook was a bad guy or not. He showed his good side, but then it usually didn’t take long before he did something stupid or weird. I was happy that I got his story in this book and I wanted to know him better. I want to say so much about Brook, but it don’t want to spoil anything and I want you to find out if he’s really bad or not.

Josh is Aster’s ex. He still cares about the Redd sisters and would do anything for them. He visits Aster every day and he supports Ivy’s dream of being an artist. I already loved him in The Masterpiecers and I still love him after this book.

If you’re looking for a very romantic and steamy book, than this is not your book. I didn’t miss the romance, because the story is really good and there were enough twists and turns that made me wanting to know everything. The Masterminds is unique, poignant, emotional and suspenseful.

Like it said before, I went in blind and you should too. I’m not going to say anything about the plot, because the timeline is pretty much the same as The Masterpiecers. There was also a little bit about what happened before the show started and after the show ended. I loved the last chapter, but I do hope that the author decides to write a little more about them.

I listened to the audiobook of this book. It was my first experience with audiobooks and it was a success! I already look forward to listening to more books. I loved the narration. There was only one voice for Brook and Josh. The narrator used accents and emotions. His voice was a little softer when Ivy or Aster talked. I was never distracted while listening. I enjoyed every minute of the more than 8 hours listening time.

Joshua Cooper has been in the middle of a investigation of a mob runner that is coming dangerously close to two of his best friends, Ivy and Astor Redd. The two girls are twins who have both in their own ways become involved in Joshua's investigation, Ivy had sold a quilt to the mob runner, and Aster hits him with her car in a motel parking lot.

Meanwhile, Brook Jackson is a judge on the Masterpiecers’s art competition that Ivy was accepted as a contestant. Brook has done his share of questionable activities but now he wants to prove himself to Ivy and clear his name so he cuts a deal with Joshua. Now it's Joshua's job to prove the real thieves and help the twins.

The Masterminds is the second book in the Masterful series by Olivia Wildenstein. This book starts off before the events in the first book, then through what was going on and then expands past the end of that story all while switching the POVs that the story is told from the twins in the first book to Joshua and Brooke in this installment.

I'd recently read another series that did something similar to this one and with each of these series I have had my moments of doubt when I think why reread things I had already read. But again the author has proven me wrong in thinking I'm going to get the same story when it truth this felt a lot like reading a completely different book with the change of angle and story focus. Great job making something new and compelling while refreshing the story from before and continuing it onward with this installment.

Overall, this was a great series whether reading both books or just one or the other of them, both stories had their own feel and took on a life of their own after switching characters which I was very impressed with and again had the pages turning reading to see what would happen in the end.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley.

Josh Cooper is involved in an investigation that tests his moral lines, he wishes he could share it with the twins, Ivy and Astrid, but the worry of him chasing a known mobster would only be more on top of their already full plates. He's determined to catch the bad guy, even more so when the mobster's death starts to tie back to the twins and the reality TV show one of them is participating in. He'll do anything to disprove the crime, breaking every rule he swore he'd follow when he became an officer of the law.

Brook Jackson is a judge on The Masterpiecers, a reality TV show dedicated to the competitive art world and the school he is an alumnae of. While he shines like wealth his family is slowly falling to ruins and he'd do anything to save them from the shame of poverty, even so far as to commit crimes for his friends that have connections to the mob. But the crimes are painting the beautiful Ivy Redd into a poor light and are causing harsh issues for her sister behind bars. He's willing to take the fall to save Ivy and her sister, but they may all fall when his friends turn on him too.

We are getting somewhere, but it's not anywhere I want to get to if the twins are truly, knowingly involved.

The Masterminds is the second book in The Mastersful series by Olivia Wildenstein. While book one was told from the POV of the twin sisters, Ivy and Astrid, The Masterminds is told from the alternating POVs of two important men in their lives. Josh has been in the girl's lives forever, he's more than a friend, he's family, and he's a cop determined to prove the media wrong about them. Brook should be little more than a judge on The Masterpiecers reality TV competition, but he only has eyes for Ivy and his knowledge of certain crimes is shocking. Like the previous novel, Olivia Wildenstein knows how to shock readers with twists and turns. Every character's tie to another character or event surprised me and mixed in with the mystery is dedication, obsession, and romance.

Her mouth curves with a smile that takes my breath away. If only that smile was for me. At least, it's not for my brother.

I was wary of reading the same story from The Masterpiecers again with a new POV especially after reading the very revealing summary, but it was so good; entertaining and gripping even more so than the previous novel was. It felt like a different book, because the perspectives were so drastically different. It also gives the reader a perspective on motive, an angle readers don't think of when they side with only one half of the story. The situations were filled with action, with a different type of fear, and a different reason to push for the innocence of the sisters. It makes the reader question the crimes and to reevaluate everything one took from the previous novel.

I found The Masterminds to be a gripping novel with a plot that was so much more than just a repeat of the series' previous release, The Masterpiecers. The story is compelling and the suspense will keep readers turning the page waiting to find out what could happen next. I am a huge fan of The Masterful series and I absolutely recommend it to readers looking for a tale filled with deceit, mystery, and even romance.

What an amazing series!

After reading Masterkey in the Murder and Mayhem boxed set, I was so enthralled by the first book, that I purchased the second, then found the third on Kindle Unlimited. This one took me through the ringer - they all did! An emotional rollercoaster that will leave you breathless with anticipation. It's action-packed, full of suspense, and it pulls at your heart strings.
The characters are well fleshed out. The series is simply fantastic! I was hooked from book one. Highly recommended, five-star must-read!
Definitely going on my "to read again" list. I can't wait for the release of book 4!

I can't decide whether I hated or loved this. Definitely not in a bad way though. The ending left me torn but the story was just so intriguing. Once again we are walked through the events of the first book but only this time it's through Josh's and Brook's POV. Even though personally, I'm not a fan of multiple POVs.

It was refreshing to be in Brook's mind and be able to know what he was thinking throughout the show. His interaction with Ivy and what he thought of her during those interactions. It was heartbreaking frankly. It was sad. But it was also lovely. I was rooting for him the entire time. Heck I was rooting for him back when I was reading Ivy and Aster's POV in the first book. This book does shine light on some of the mysteries of the first book and helps delve deeper into the same connected story. However, it's not until the last few chapters that we get a glimpse as to what happens after the events of the first book. I came in thinking this was going to be a direct sequel but it was more of the events from the first book but from Josh's and Brook's POV. And then the last few chapters were the sequel aspect of the story.

Josh. Oh Josh. Talk about heartbreak. It was so fun to see just how much Josh cared about the twins. Everything that he did revolved around them and he always put them ahead of anyone else including himself. He was constantly putting himself into dangerous situations in order to protect the twins as best he could. He put them ahead of his love life . But more than anything, I wanted Josh to be happy. I was so invested in his character.

Overall, it was a fun and fairly fast read. Easy to get into and once I got into it, I didn't want to put it down. I can't wait for the third installment.

The Masterminds is a Masterful read! 5 STARS all the way. Before I tell you what I loved I want to thank Olivia Wildenstein for my advanced copy. I loved THE MASTERPIECERS was amazing and so well-crafted that I couldn’t wait to see what came next. As in THE MASTERPIECERS this book is split into two POVs we get into the minds of Josh who I loved in the first book and Brook who I wanted to know more about so this was a perfect combination.
Brook Jackson is one of the Judges for THE MASTERPIECERS, in my opinion he is a broken man looking for his missing piece. The way this story is constructed you are able to go through Ivy’s experience on the show through the eyes of Brook who is torn between wanting to get to know the perfection that is Ivy and not repeating history and upsetting his brother Chase yet again. Brook becomes the fall guy for money laundering plot that is the center of this story. You as a reader aren’t sure if you want to hug him or yell at him by the end of the story.
Then you have to add to the equation Joshua Cooper. The cop the, the best friend and the good guy to Brook’s bad guy. I loved the bits and pieces of Josh’s life that show the way he interacts with everyone in his life. He is a sneaky cop that works his way back on the case against Brook. I love his creativity his smart-ass personality it makes the story so much more fun to read.
All and all Ms. Wildenstein makes you fall in love with her characters. Makes you want to keep reading and most of all makes you smile because there’s enough romance in the story to make you cheer and smile. So if you are looking for a book to blow YOUR MIND this is the book for YOU.

really captivating read. started it Friday morning and didn't want to put it down. I haven't read the first in the series yet but this book works very well as a stand alone novel so would recommend it to everyone whether you have read the first book or not. it took me a couple of chapters to get into it as each chapter is written from a different person's perspective but once I got over that the many twists and turns kept me interested in all the main characters all the way through and I wanted to know what would happen to them as I was reading. I would definitely recommend it to everyone and will be reading the first book in the series next.

This was a really wonderful book! It was so interesting to see things from other viewpoints besides just the twins. I really loved the twists in it, and I LOVED the ending. This is a must if you enjoyed the first book, The Masterpiecers.

I received a copy of The Masterminds from the author, Olivia Wildenstein. All opinions expressed are my own.

I really don't know how I feel about this. On one hand, I love the story (see my previous review!) but on the other, I don't think this second volume was capitalized upon enough.

1. The characters. This is the part that I really enjoy. We spend an extensive amount of time with each of the main characters (there are three notable ones) in their POV's and their characters are developed nicely. The mystery element of the story really lends itself to a sort of psychoanalysis that the author engages in enthusiastically. I loved the investigation of each character's motivations and how they interplayed with each other.

2. The plot. This is the bit I have an issue with. The first two thirds of the book is basically a retelling of what happened in the whole of the first book, but with a different perspective: this time, on the other side of the mystery (Brook and Josh vs. Ivy). Honestly, I don't think it was really necessary to devote that much page time to it. It felt repetitive and I found myself becoming increasingly impatient with the pace. I enjoyed seeing the other side of the story, but it expanded to take up most of the book which I don't think was necessary. However, the last third was a very enjoyable addition to the plot and while I found the ending to be a bit of a whirlwind, it was a good wrap-up to the events introduced in the first book.

3. The romance. Again, this is something I'm not too sure about because of the repetition of events. Basically, the new information concerning the main relationship (a love triangle that's kinda-sorta not a love triangle between Chase, Brook, and Ivy) is just that Brook massively in love with Ivy which you could already surmise by the events in the first book. Personally, this installment felt mostly like it was catering to fans who wanted to see a new perspective on the events. Which is great, but I think it's a good job for a novella. In any case, the romance ended nicely and I didn't mind the love triangle too much (which is kind of saying a lot for me!).

The Final Verdict:
While this installment is a bit repetitive (and slightly unnecessary), I did thoroughly enjoy the continued character insights.

Certified-fresh, gripping and mind-blowing.

The Masterminds by Olivia Wildenstein has blown me away.

Before I write about anything else, I’d like to rave about my experience while reading The Masterminds.

This novel is fine and prime example of how one book can be more powerful than reading a dragged-out story in parts (read series) and the painful time every reader dreads to kill while waiting for the next installment. I have nothing against series, but when something as dominant as The Masterminds comes along the way, I believe I’m converted; and I haven’t even read the first book, yet.

The Masterminds is told from the perspective of Brook and Josh.

Josh is trying to nail the Discoli family down which leads him to Brook, who fronts as a judge of a famous competition while behind the scenes, he is doing things he’s not supposed to. Both of them are trying to save who they love the most. Ivy and Aster, the twins from the first novel are tangled in this mess and the story moves forward with a pace that had me biting my nails till I didn't have any left.

Olivia Wildenstein is a fine craftswoman of words. She weaved a story so gripping and profoundly moving, giving each and every character a powerful motive to make The Masterminds whole. What surprised me even more is how she didn’t use detailed sex scenes as a common literary device I’ve come across these days that many authors use to shove the plot forward and stretch the words count to a painful extent. She knows which genre she’s writing for and how to present it well. Her writing is simple because the complexities lie in her characters and the dense plot. She is a true mastermind in devising crisp sentences that don’t come across robotic.

In addition to this, I liked that Olivia Wildenstein didn’t overdo the descriptions of settings and places because I tend to skip those paragraphs altogether. I hate reading about the color of the drapes and the cracks on the wall unless it's coming from Agatha Christie. Do you catch my drift? Descriptions can be poetic, but can also ruin the story if the writing is sloppy. That's where some readers like me struggle to connect with the characters. I agree, some of the readers might disagree with me on this. But, give The Masterminds a chance and see for yourself how clever Olivia Wildenstein’s writing actually is. Even without the flowery descriptions, I could relate to the characters, their stories, fears and insecurities.

I also appreciate her writing more because every time I tried guessing the mystery of the missing diamonds, I was proved wrong. I loved the fact how Olivia Wildenstein didn’t describe Diana’s physical attributes at first when she talks to Brook and carefully unwraps her in another scene in the future when I kept racking my head wondering who is Josh describing, using her physical attributes. The way this author created doubt in my mind in every chapter and scene was spectacular.

The ending was gut-wrenching and I did not see that coming. Olivia Wildenstein, you knocked the wind out of me using a sledgehammer.

How could you?

Although, I do believe it was not easy for you to write it as well. Maybe that’s why the chapter was short and a tough one. I went back to reading it twice before I could grasp what happened and what I read was actually what it meant.

Before I forget, here are my favorite quotes from the book:

Unfortunately, I’ve learned that sometimes you’ll love people who won’t love you back, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

&

My other half.
My sweeter half.
My shattered half.

& one more….

To me, Ivy and Aster are two parts of the same person. In the womb, a person’s right arm doesn’t grow sooner than the left.

I’m a fan and am looking forward to read more of Olivia Wildenstein’s works of art.

I really love this book series! This prequel gives you insight on the other story of what really happened or from point of views different from the first book! While reading The Masterpiecers I had opinions of these characters that I thought were bad but reading Masterminds you get to understand and see what these characters had gone through and started to like them. You see the back story and understand it more as a whole. I just love this author's style of writing! This book was fantastic and kept me on the edge of seat with twists and turns just like The Masterpiecers!!! I recommend reading this series!! It's very exciting and can't wait to see what this author comes up with next!!

Once again Olivia Wildenstein has written with a unique style. In The Masterpiece Olivia has written the story from Ivy and Aster's point of view in this book it is the same story line but from Joshua and Brook's view point. I would recommend you read these two book back to back as I found myself doing a little trying to remember things. Nicholas Barta does a wonderful job again of narrating this book.

“The Masterminds” is a brilliantly innovative and entertaining revisit to the “Masterpiercers” and the criminal skullduggery and death that not only undermines the reality television show but heightens an investigation into the murder of a mob runner as well as the search for missing diamonds. Combining the before, after and events of the first book Olivia Wildenstein creates a mesmerizing tale that begins with Joshua Cooper’s investigation into the death of mob runner Todd Mann which implicates his friends Aster and Ivy Redd. Although the FBI believes the girls are involved with the mob with the incarceration of Aster for Mann’s murder and the disappearance of one of Ivy’s quilts, Josh is determined to prove their innocence.

With the girls being stalked by a murderer who’s looking for his missing diamonds, Josh’s investigation uncovers clues that point to Brook Jackson one of the three judges in the reality television competition who’s plagued by his family's debts taking an easy route to regaining their solvency by agreeing to work with the real felons. But plans go awry when he falls for Ivy, receives a ripped quilt in the mail and is finally accused in the money laundering scam. Imprisoned, fearing he can never win the girl he cares for, Brook brokers a deal for his freedom, hoping to bring the real criminals to justice and to win Ivy’s favour.

Fast-paced the tension continually escalates as the murderer struggling to cover-up his slip-ups as he searches for his diamonds not only kills again, ransacks the Redd twin’s apartment, but hires a prison inmate to assault Aster. Gripping and captivating “the Masterminds” parallels the first novel but from Josh and Brook’s perspectives gaining an edge when it looks at the events after the arrest of the art competition judge when he and Josh join forces to bring down the real criminals. Well-developed and thrilling in its intensity and suspense the plot culminates in an explosive climax that brings death and heartbreak as well as love and redemption.

Multifaceted and strong in personality the characters capture your imagination as they face their uncertainty, doubts and fears. Josh Cooper an idealistic cop puts loyalty and commitment to Aster and Ivy ahead of his duty starting his investigation while on suspension. Brook Jackson haunted by his family’s debt load, a suicidal father after his parent’s breakup and a brother who hates him for wrongs he never committed is flawed and vulnerable in his need to rectify his problems. In love with Ivy who’s been cold and unforgiving towards him Brook’s determined to change his life and find forgiveness in her eyes. Whether Josh and Aster, or Brook and Ivy, this is definitely a story of flawed people and imperfect love.

I loved “Masterminds” and rate it highly. I won’t hesitate to look for other novels by Olivia Wildenstein in future.

**** 4.5 Cranky Stars ****

When I first started this book, I thought it was going to be a hard sell. We already know what happens in Masterpiecers. I worried it would be the same story, but from a different angle. This was not the case. The author does a wonderful job of giving different perspectives without repetition.

Told from the dual perspectives of Josh and Brook: one hero and one villain. Issues of family bonds and friendship, and at times, rivalry are portrayed in this work.

Joshua is the childhood friend of Ivy and Aster Redd, the twins at the heart of this story and central to the mystery of a crime. He was also the lover of Aster Redd until her illness came between them. Aster is key to solving the mystery to clear the Redd Twin’s names.

Loyal and protective, Josh tries to balance his job, his friendship with the twins, and his new love life. He goes above and beyond, but this causes untold conflict in both his professional and personal life.

Brook: The son of a prominent family who are now in decline he has found himself in a difficult situation that begins to unravel. Secrets, not to mention, an intense sibling rivalry with his brother, hang like a noose around his neck. Matters are complicated when his feelings for someone grow and the bonds of friendship begin to fray with possibly deadly results.

The ending of this story shook me. I read it twice and felt a piece of my dead, cold heart break off.

I highly recommend both The Masterminds and Masterpiecers. Both are good, but I’d say The Masterminds is better. Taut, quirky, funny in places and heartbreaking in others – pick this series up and give it a go. You won’t be disappointed.

The Masterminds by Olivia Wilderstein.

In the interests of duality and balance, this book was inevitable, this is the story of the menfolk first introduced in book one The Masterpiecers. Josh and Brook are seemingly adversaries as the truth of Brook's involvement in events that have left Aster in a coma and Ivy looking over her shoulder indefinitely for the mobsters who seek to kill both sisters over the loss of some valuable diamonds and their knowledge that will leave all of the guilty incarcerated .

Josh as desperate loyal man, a true childhood friend and confidante to both girls and his friendship is a constant and the driving force for the story.

Meanwhile, Brook is the man brought low by his associations and his own brotherly jealousy. His pseudo fraternal bond with some dubious characters leave him in despair as his love for Ivy is sullied and he is wracked with guilt whilst still savouring every moment he has in her presence despite the pain and discomfort of that guilt.

Again the story here is taut and well plotted and again we delve deeply into what galvanises and catalyses us despite the darkness it might stem from. Jealousies, trust issues and love itself. Again this book does not come to what one might call the "expected " conclusion but despite it's unpredictable nature it is satisfying and brings the stories of Aster Brook, Ivy and Josh to a close with excitement, sadness and a bit of a pang that our association has come to an end.

I highly recommend this book, but suggest both as a unit for a really enjoyable pairing. I will have no difficulty seeking out more books by the Author if this is the quality of her work.

This book is prefaced by the quote “A villain is just a victim whose story hasn’t been told”, which gives a clue to the following story.

The Masterminds are a group of three very bright boys who were at college together, but then their lives head in different directions.

It revisits the events in The Masterpiecers, but this time through the eyes of two male characters. They are Brook, one of the judges, and older brother of Chase, a contestant, and Josh, a police officer, and childhood friend of Aster and Ivy.
Again, they narrate alternating chapters, and a very different view of all the events emerge, causing the reader to wonder who the hero is, and who the villain.
I really enjoyed this book, the way it completely turned around my preconceptions, and showed the motivations of these two characters. Both were sympathetic, although I found Josh the nicer person.

The end was a little sentimental, and I thought Aster and her problems had been side-lined in favour of Ivy’s story
Still I’d give it four stars.

(This is the second of a pair of books, the first of which is The Masterpiecers, which need to be read in succession, to fully understand the story, but each can be read as a stand-alone.)

Thanks to THE Book Club on Facebook (TBC on FB) for the opportunity to read this book.

The blurb:

The Masterminds by Olivia Wildenstein is a thrilling and suspenseful read. It is a follow up to book one, The Masterpiecers. This book takes place at the same time as the first but from different points of view.
Wow what an incredible read! I REALLY enjoyed this one. Reading this book answered a lot of my questions from the first one. You see another side to Brook, who was in the first book. I understand his actions a little more now. Then there’s Josh, who gave us a look into him and also more into Ivy and Aster.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Along with some twists and turns, it also brought out some emotions. I did some crying and my heart was hurting by the end.
This was by far my favorite of the two. I give this 5 stars.

Full disclosure: I worked on this book as an editor. (That's why I left the stars out)

The Masterminds is an enjoyable thriller, fast paced, and populated with interesting and fleshed out characters. I did not read the first book in the series, an alternate POV of roughly the same events, but that did not interfere with my understanding or enjoyment of the book. Things I liked most about the Masterminds:
I love the premise of art-based reality TV, and now I'm wondering why someone hasn't done this already. I really enjoyed the two POV characters she chose - two males on opposite sides of an investigation, neither perfect. I also appreciated the different kinds of nuanced relationships in this book - I loved that about these characters. Friendships and romantic relationships are muddy in real life, and I thought she represented this well, and it made for a richer read.

This wasn't what I expected - I thought it would follow on from Book 1, but actually it tells the same story from the perspective of two other characters, Brook and Josh, neither of whom were particularly endearing in book one! Actually the story is well balanced between these two characters - my main complaint regarding book one was that I felt Ivy's story dominated and Aster was more of a sub plot. This is also a more straightforward crime narrative with many of the other aspects from book one (e.g. schizophrenia and the art competition itself) providing more of a general background.

I received an advance review copy of this book through The Book Club.

Blown away. If you liked Masterpiecers, you will love Masterminds. Told through two alternating male POV, the novel is a thrilling rollercoaster. It's one of those books that is simply "unputdownable" and kept me on the edge of my seat right until the last word. The pace is just right. The dialogue rings true. The tone is perfect. I simply can't say anything negative about it. I've just finished the book and my only worry is what on earth am I going to read next, because Masterminds will be a hard act to follow.

Once again we are transferred into the story of what happened on and off camera of the Masterpiercers. This time in 2 different POVs, Josh the twins best friend who is a cop and Brook one of the "masterminds" behind the crimes. I really enjoyed reading The Masterminds, even more so than the first book. I connected more with both characters and the twins when reading it. The ending shocked me and I'm still a tad shaken. I am really hoping we can get a little more from Asher and how she handles everything after it is all said and done.

It took me a while to get in to this book. Maybe because I haven't read book 1, but once I was in I really enjoyed it. The main characters are all very likeable, even Brook, (this was confusing as Brook is predominantly a girl's name in the UK). The narration was excellent and brought the characters to life. Now I desperately need to read book 1, and I am wishing there was a book 3! 5 stars from me.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this sequel to the Masterpiecers. I really enjoyed reading from Brook and Josh's points of view--I especially liked getting to know and love Brook, who I considered a villain in the first book. As usual, Wildenstein keeps us guessing throughout. Despite the dark and gritty settings, this book is a fun ride.

Joshua Cooper has been investigating a mob runner. The hardest part has been not being able to discuss his investigation with the two people he's closest to, Ivy and Aster Redd, as he tries to keep them safe by keeping them separate from this aspect of his life. That becomes impossible when Aster is accused of running down the mob runner with her car and killing him. When Ivy gets a spot in a televised art competition that gives her a chance at winning acceptance at the prestigious Masterpiecers school, Josh figures that, at least, Ivy will be out of harm's way. Little does he know that everything isn't what they seem in the competition or with its organizers. Now, Josh has to figure out how to keep Aster safe in prison and Ivy safe at The Masterpiecers, all while investigating his case and getting to the bottom of things.

I was gifted a copy of The Masterminds, book 2 in the Masterful series, by Olivia Wildenstein, in exchange for an honest review and I'm so happy that I was! After reading book 1 in the series, I was dying to read the sequel. Now, in a way, this is as much a companion to the first book as it is a sequel because it gives a lot of the background leading up to the events of the competition. Also, while The Masterpiecers is written alternately from Aster's and Ivy's points of view, The Masterminds alternates between Josh's and Brook's perspectives. This also helps to gain a lot of information that you didn't get in book 1, so a lot of questions were answered. It also follows up with the events after the ending of book 1, which I had really been looking forward to reading about. I really enjoyed getting additional background information on the rest of the characters. I'm definitely looking forward to reading book 3.

Rating: 4 stars

Mind blowing and unique but a little boring at times. That's how I would describe The Masterminds, the sequel to The Masterpiecers.

This second installment is written in the POVs of Brook and Josh, which was GREAT. I loved the different intake of the whole situation, of all the drama and I feel like this was the best choice Wildenstein could've made.
Brook's POV was interesting because you could delve into his character. You were able to see how not everything is black-and-white. Brook Jackson is THE definition of a gray character, I think.
Josh's POV was just the best, to be frank. It was amazing to read about and get to know his character more. I have to admit that I'm slightly biased though, because after Aster, Josh was my favourite character in The Masterpiecers.

But I would also describe this sequel as a little boring because half the book is about the events in the first book. It's still interesting because it's being told in different POVs but I also got bored sometimes.

The ending I did NOT expect and it's was mind blowing. A little unsatisfying in my opinion but realistic and solid.

All in all, it was a great sequel but I have to say that The Masterpiecers will forever be my favourite.

What. The. Heck

I love Olivia's writing, but I do not care for this series. One, it was very confusing on how the plot advances from one book to another with no clear follow through. Second, even though the writing is wonderful, the series feels rushed. And, third, the series ends with to me a cliffhanger! I want to know what happened to Aster after being treated so badly due to her disease. I felt that the series ended so abruptly and am disappointed with Josh's end. Also, schizophrenia is a disease, but the ppl who have it shouldn't be treated with constant pity, denial, or respect. I was really upset how many characters in the series automatically pressured that Aster is only one thing, and that's "crazy" d/t her diagnosis. I have enjoyed all other series by Olivia except this one. Regardless of my disappointment, I will continue reading her stories because her writing is so full of life and is just fantastic.
