Brendan Fraser Reveals Why Tom Cruise's 2017 'The Mummy' Flopped

Brendan Fraser famously portrayed Rick O’Connell in the three original The Mummy films, which were released in theaters beginning in 1999.

Now, he’s explaining why he thinks the 2017 reboot of the film, starring Tom Cruise, did not perform well at the box office.

If you don’t know, the 2017 version was not well-reviewed, made less that $32 million in its opening weekend at the box office and allegedly had a budget of $190 million.

Director of Tom Cruise's 'The Mummy' Calls the Movie His 'Biggest Failure'

Director Alex Kurtzman is not a fan of his film The Mummy.

The movie, which was released in 2017 and starred Tom Cruise, was designed to connect Universal’s iconic monster movies through their Dark Universe franchise. Unfortunately, the movie was lambasted by critics and grossed $410 million globally, putting the studio’s franchise hopes on hold.

In a new interview, Alex called The Mummy the “biggest failure of my life, both personally and professionally.”

'Wonder Woman' Beats 'The Mummy' at Weekend Box Office

Wonder Woman once again topped the weekend box office with a whopping $57.2 million in its second outing!

According to THR, the Gal Gadot-led flick passed the $200 million mark domestically.

Coming in at No. 2 was Tom Cruise‘s The Mummy, which debuted to $32.2 million in the U.S. and $141.8 million overseas.

Taking the third spot was the animated film Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie – starring the voices of Ed Helms, Jordan Peele, and Nick Kroll – earning an an additional $12.3 million for a domestic total of $44.6 million so far.

Rounding out the top five were Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Guardians of the Galaxy Vo. 2, grossing $10.7 million and $6.2 million, respectively.

'Wonder Woman' Set to Top 'The Mummy' in Second Weekend

Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman is off to a great start in its second weekend and it will top Tom Cruise‘s The Mummy at the North American box office.

The film earned $15.8 million on Friday and is set to gross $54 million for the weekend, which will amount to one of the lowest first to second weekend drops ever for a major superhero movie, according to THR.

The Mummy earned $12 million on Friday and the film is expected to gross around $30 million total for the weekend, which will be the lowest gross for any of Universal’s The Mummy films. On the bright side, the film is on track to gross $139 million this weekend internationally for a number one start around the world!

The Mummy is being released in theaters at midnight tonight, and fans are wondering if they should stick around for an end credits scene.
