'Suits' Season 7 Part 2 Review: The Seeds Of Change Have Been Planted

This article is more than 6 years old.

Ratings:

Over the summer, Suits saw a major spike in ratings during its mid-season finale with a live audience of 1.68 million viewers.

Normally, based on this pattern, one would extrapolate the show to tick down far below this number during its winter run… but these are no ordinary circumstances. These next six episodes are going to act as the exit episodes for Mike and Rachel while also setting the stage for a now confirmed Chicago-set Jessica Pearson spinoff.

It is not hard to imagine a scenario where the show ticks higher than usual for this year’s winter offering. At the very least, it seems fair to assume there will be an inflated season finale rating this year that could tick as high as the mid-two million range if fandom has anything to say about it.

Review:

Following last season’s bombshell that saw Jessica get disbarred in the state of NY, change is afoot at Pearson Specter Litt.

It was known going into this latest set of episodes that we’d be setting the stage for a tidal shift in structure by the finale. Mike and Rachel will be bidding farewell and Jessica will be getting her own show in Chicago. Those things will be set up as early as the season premiere.

However, Suits is thinking much further into the future if the first three episodes of the latest run have anything to say about it. Fans are going to be treated to new sides of a lot of key players, as well as have their emotional buttons pushed in very new and curious ways that could leave them in a shattered place.

The show is playing very heavily into its primetime soap-opera roots with the second half of season seven and it does not disappoint. Additionally, newcomers such as Alex and Paula are getting a major chance to shine that prove they are fully capable of holding their own against the likes of Harvey and Louis.

With the first three episodes of the new run, Suits is proving it isn’t done telling stories just yet. Did it ever plan on going this long? Probably not, but it’s pulling it off flawlessly.

We are being treated to some of the show’s very best work. Maybe because it’s the swan song for two of its favorites, maybe for some other reason. Regardless, it’s a hell of a lot of fun to watch.
