Pablo Fornals' late strike gave Keylor Navas no chance

Pablo Fornals scored a superb late goal for Villarreal as they won at the Bernabeu for the first time to load more pressure on Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

Real edged the first half and Gareth Bale had a header ruled out for offside, before Cristiano Ronaldo's free-kick was tipped on to the bar.

However, the visitors improved in the second period and deservedly went ahead after breaking at pace from a Real corner.

Denis Cheryshev found Enes Unal, whose shot was saved by Keylor Navas - but Fornals then chipped the stranded keeper from 20 yards.

Fourth-placed Real Madrid, who won last season's La Liga title and the Champions League, remain 16 points behind leaders Barcelona - and that gap could increase when Barca visit Real Sociedad on Sunday (19:45 GMT).

Zidane's side's Champions League spot for next season is looking perilous - they now sit only one point above Villarreal, who move up to fifth.

Ronaldo, who has only scored four La Liga goals this season, missed several chances to score but had a strong penalty appeal turned down in the first half when he was clipped just before shooting at keeper Sergio Asenjo, who put in an excellent performance.

    Ronaldo has been brilliant these last few years which has helped RM considerably but is the magic starting to finally fade just a little. Perez bought Bale as the heir to Ronaldo's throne and it hasn't quite worked out that way.

    Did Ronaldo contribute anything to the team in this game. Obsessed with personal glory and does nothing until the ball reaches him in the box. He'd do well to watch Messi in the Celta game this week. Scored the 1st two, made the 3rd and created nearly everything. Vastly superior to Ronaldo.

    Ronaldo has 4 goals from 93 shots in La Liga this season. That's a conversion rate of 4%, the lowest of any player in the world this season!

    14/15 season - 48 La Liga goals

    15/16 season - 35 La Liga goals

    16/17 season - 25 La Liga goals

    17/18 season - 4 La Liga goals (so far)

    Clearly he's been getting worse for 3 seasons now...

    No doubt ronaldo will look to jump ship at end of season. Psg will k.O chmps lg chances. Real are better without him. Ronaldo has never been as good as messi and thats individually or as a team player.

    Can't see Zidane sticking around for too long. For Real Madrid to be languishing in 4th already 16 points behind Barca would spell the end for most managers.

    Feel like CL can't come soon enough for Real. Only chance for Zidane to save his job.

    Also fair play to Villareal in all of this. As a place, pretty much the Spanish equivalent of Weston-Super-Mare, this team has spent 10 years punching above its weight. It´s not been done with big spending, either.

    How many of those 93 shots were free kicks? I’ve always thought his conversion % was terrible even when he was on form yet no matter how many he misses, no one else in the team is allowed to take them.

    Time he was moved on.

    Now that Ronaldo is past his best, you can clearly see Real were a one man team . He scored around half their goals . With the emphasis on getting it to him quick .
    Not sure Hazards the answer . He isn’t productive and goes through spells where he does nothing .

    Three Champions League titles in four years; first La Liga title since 2012. Clearly Zidane critics have all forgotten his accomplishments. It’s only his fourth year as a manager and his first tough season. For goodness sake give him time and transfer money support during this bad period!!! They hardly bought anyone recognisable over the summer....

    Not surprised. Ronaldo isnt the best player in the world.. & hasnt been for a long while.. But, this makes things better for their Champions league stakes as theyll put everything into that & should make for a better encounter when PSG come to town in the champions league. Barca's to lose. At least Countinho will pick up some meaninful silverware..

    I am really enjoying this slump by the media's favourites. Not much coverage of Ronaldo et al, i wonder why? I would have thought he would lead them out of this slump, but then that would not be all about him, would it ? Therefore he has no interest. Best in the world? Do me a favour. All the while Barca roll along nicely, with the maestro leading the way. Long may it continue. Feel for ZZ though.

    Not sure why so many are having a pop at Ronaldo. His record speaks for itself. He is going through a bad patch (as are RM). He may be slightly inferior to Messi (arguable). His best days may be behind him. He may also have a high opinion of himself. Also I am not a fan!
    Having said all that, he has been a super footballer, who at least deserves a bit of respect and not a slagging off!

    Just goes to show how important Ronaldo can be for RM. One of his biggest fans but won't shy away from the fact he has been terrible in la Liga this season. Perez needs to stick with Zidane!

    Average of 1.77 points a game is not good enough for a team worth millions and the reputation of being one of the biggest clubs in the world.

    They are lacking creativity and really need an overhaul. A new striker included.

    Was actually at the game. Villarreal rarely looked in danger at the back. Real never really threatened and to be honest were quite disappointing to watch, much like Arsenal at times, lots of the ball but doing nothing with it. Villarreal always looked like they could hit Real on the break.

    If Perez backs the manager then he'll give him funds to spend now. If not a lot of transfer activity happens then I think it means a change of manager is coming.
