It feels like an age since the wonderful The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds landed on the 3DS. Back in 2013 the 3DS was really on a roll and we were spoilt for choice, but this sequel to the classic SNES The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past really hit the mark and we promptly awarded it 10/10 in our review at the time.
Reddit users recently allowed their imaginations to get the better of them when it was revealed that Nintendo PR reps have been contacting journalists and requesting permission to re-quote reviews of A Link Between Worlds:
We did think it was a bit strange when we got this request from PR ourselves, as for some time A Link Between Worlds has been available as a budget Selects release in Europe. Of course, the first thing which comes to mind is "could a Switch port of this wonderful game be in the works?"
Alas however, in North America the game hasn't had a Selects release. It looks likely that a Selects release will be announced soon by Nintendo of America, which will be welcome news for 3DS owners who haven't yet picked up this amazing game yet - and perhaps answers why Nintendo PR is asking for fresh review quotes.

Here's the thing.
Did they ask for review quotes for the EU release of the Selects Edition?
Did they ask for quotes for all the sizzle reels featuring older 3DS games when advertising the New 2DS XL, and it's back catalogue?
Did they ask for review quotes for every other Selects release?
Again, no point speculating until confirmation, but it is weird and unusual to hear about this.
My money is on Skyward Sword as the first Zelda remaster to come to the Switch.
As much as I like this game, I would say... No, no thanks.
I prefer by far having a new game instead of the port of the last game in the (not 3D) serie.
Reddit wonders things aplenty.
How in the world has this game been out for that long already!?
If true, I'll be very meh about it. The game is fantastic, but the Switch doesn't need to have ports of everything. Plus, it's already on a portable system.
It was for the january sales.
False flags.
I'd buy it again for Switch.
However..... Grezzo did tweet out a “want to make a legend 2?” quote back in November or so that sent the internet buzzing away. Maybe these two ideas go together and there is a Grezzo HD remake going to get them some training on making HD games and build their skills as programmers. I think that’s what they started out with on the 3DS before they got their shot at their own game, Ever Oasis.
A Switch version of ALBW makes a lot of sense to me, I can see it happening.
We must expect some Zelda stuff like this for the Switch, while waiting 3-4 years for another big one
I'd prefer a home console port of a Zelda game instead... Maybe SS or TP although TP is unlikely since it was already ported to Wii U 2 years ago...
I loved the game, but no thanks. Part of what made the game really work was (surprise!) the 3D, which really made the game pop! I mean, it wasn't a deal breaker, but I would assume that most people who bought the Switch also have a 3DS, so this port would be pointless.
Nintendo SHOULD, however, do a 2D Zelda on Switch! I don't anticipate a new 3D Zelda until the end of the hardware cycle, or until the release of the next console, so fill that void with a smaller release.....or, perhaps, Zelda Maker?
I never got around to it the first time. I’ll pick it up.
@8-Bit_Zorldo I'll take ALL of the ports. New games are great but customers need more than waiting for new big titles. There are lots of games people missed because they haven't had a Nintendo system since Gamecube or the Wii. It's well worth re-releasing the hits on the Switch.
@faint
Oh man you should if you have a 3DS. You can get it pretty cheap now too. It's a great game.
@BanjoPickles I'm with BanjoPickles. This game was AMAZING and top 3 of all the 3DS games, but it needs to be in 3D
It would be very cool if it was, with touched-up HD graphics that didn't look quite so cheesy and "'90s" at times (and I mean that artistically, with it's often kinda cheap and shiny Photoshop filter effect look, not technically). But it probably is just some budget release or whatever.
I seriously doubt this will be coming to the switch. I agree with the mind set if anything, it is just being added to the nintendo selects line or just for sales numbers.
My guess is that they will announce a couple of new Nintendo Select titles for the 3DS in their next Direct. So they might just finally release this one in the U.S. I also noticed that Amazon has recently been selling other 3DS titles like Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam pretty cheaply, so that's another guess from me as to what else they might announce as new Nintendo Selects.
If we're gonna get ports of the 2D games rather than a new one, I'd prefer Phantom Hourglass and/or Spirit Tracks. Been kicking myself for ages for trading those in back when I was a poor college student. Rough times...
This will not happen for 3 reasons.
1) its already on a portable device that Nintendo intend to continue supporting, for at least another year. Nintendo only port over games from devices they have stopped supporting unless its a new console shared game like TP was and BOTW is. normally Nintendo will wait years before releasing ports of mid generation games like ALBW.
2) its one of the best games on that system actually earning various goty awards when it was released, Its actually one of the best handheld games ever made, i still also remember the hype it generated at the time, games like that dont get remade so soon after release, and especially not while the system they are on is still supported.
3) there are a host of other Zelda titles that would be ported to the Switch before any game from a system that is still supported gets ported, chief among them is Skyward Sword but even other handheld ones like Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass will probably see a release on the Switch before ALBW.
Word on the street is that The Big N is going to remake/reimagine Link’s awakening for the 3DS ! There might still be some live in that little amazing handheld :3
I'll take any ports, but the ones I'd most like ported to Switch are Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. For some reason I just feel like those benefit more from being played on a big screen than ALBW, and since I don't own an N64, a Switch port is the only way I'd get to play them on a TV.
Without stereo 3D, ALBW sucks. It was designed for 3D with a top-down view.
Super Mario Odyssey already copied ALBW's wall painting mechanics, nothing fresh anymore.
I don't see why 3DS ports aren't easily done on Switch. It's very simple to port games onto Switch. There's also a rumour that Link's Awakening is being remade using the ALBW engine.
I don’t see that happening.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They probably are but the 3DS is still supported, Nintendo never port over mid gen games like ALBW while they are on a system that is still being sold and having games made for it. Especially not a game as good as ALBW, it sells systems.
@Hobbesyall really? That would be awesome
ALBW is a fantastic game!
@gaga64 Well that’s what what’s is face from ResetERA claims to be true! And to be perfectly honest I found that a likely possibility :3
@Razer Yoshi's Woolly World, Super Mario Maker, Hyrule Warriors and others say differently. And in those cases it was much more difficult to work with the limitations of the hardware and downgrading them. The opposite is the case on Switch, they can make enhancements.
How about a new game instead
@Razer Explain Hyrule Warriors and Yoshi's Woolly World then?
It was a decent game but there are better 2D Zelda games. I'd much rather see the 2 NES entries updated in a modern game engine or the GameBoy entries before this. Or why not a new 2D Zelda?
Probably a 3DS Selects line. Gotta retire the 3DS out with a bang this year. Metroid: Samus Returns will likely be among that line.
@19wonders @SLIGEACH_EIRE These are cross platform games that are released at around the same time normally with different features...that is nothing like a direct port, think Smash Bro's, Nintendo normally do this with their handheld and consoles that are available during the same generation (WiiU and 3DS). They did so with the Wii and DS.
How long did they wait before releasing Wind Waker again? or Twilight Princess? Wind Waker didn't even get a Wii release at all.
ALBW will probably be ported to the Switch sometime in 2020 or after.
@MarcelRguez - I wonder why.
@JHDK I'd like to see a 'Zelda Classics HD Collection' containing the Wind Waker and Twilight Sword remasters from Wii U along with a new Skyward Sword remaster.
@JHDK as much as i want a Skyward Sword HD remake (480p just doesn't do that art style justice) it seems like a tricky one… sure, the joy cons have motion controls which would totally work for TV play but how would you play in portable mode? just not sure we'll ever see a SS remake to be honest
US launch of Selects is a plausible explanation for requesting a quote. I can't see Nintendo porting anything from 3DS to Switch, outside of a handful of Virtual Console titles in the very distant future - it makes no sense at all. If there's anything in development for the Zelda franchise at the moment, then a new 2D Zelda for the 3DS (utilising the ALBW engine) as a swansong release for the system is surely most likely.
It's not coming to the Switch, it's going to the iOS. A mobile Zelda is overdue.
📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️📱⚔️
If this, Mario 3D Land and Metroid: Samus Returns were ported to Switch, I would be very happy and double dip!
I’d rather see the original Legend of Zelda ‘HD’ ported (maybe using a graphics design similar to Link Between Worlds).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Woolly World and Mario Maker are terrible examples. those were not successful games from a currently supported system being ported over, those were games from a dead platform being given a fair shot on hardware that people actually owned. I loved my Wii U and all, but lets be honest, there weren't many of us who did. Hyrule Warriors, given the time between the Wii U and 3DS releases, is a better example, but it also wasn't developed by Nintendo. they probably had get it on another platform to give Koei Tecmo the return on investment they promised them.
@BanjoPickles There were a few articles doing the rounds when BOTW launched that talked about the game being mapped out in a 2D engine. I can definitely see a "Zelda Maker" on Switch, but not for a year or two.
Great game but thank you we don’t need a port of it. If u want to port a zelda game port the last wii u hd remasters.
The more people port-beg, the more I am convinced that the Switch library is lacking.
it feels like 2018 is going to be a gigantic rehash of gaming past (vs the epic nature of 2017 gaming). Including Burnout Paradise "remaster/HD", speculation is all about "re-releases at full AAA prices".
Guess we'll have to (continue) to look towards the Indie scene for interesting new gameplay and storylines.
@quinnbad @frogopus It could be done, look at World of Goo on Switch with motion or touch controls depending on how you play. However, I see them doing away with motion for the Switch version and making it more of a classic control style. I know SS had motion+ but I think of it in terms of how TP worked well for both Wii and GCN.
@Crono1973 plenty of awesome games that aren't just ports/"remaster"/whatever the heck you want to call it out there for the Switch.
A lot of overpay for old content too, though.
3DS will probably still see a trickle of releases through 2018, but I think this is the year the system transitions into more of an entry level/budget system for Nintendo which is not an uncommon practice from them when the end of a hardware cycle rolls around for some of their successful hardware lines.
Like the GB Micro, DSi XL, and Wii Mini before it, the 2DS XL is probably the final iteration of the successful 3DS hardware line as Nintendo winds down support for it.
@Crono1973 You're lacking. No one is begging, this is a discussion. Stop lacking.
@Crono1973 I'd rather see good ports of good games rather than new games that suck balls.
@Crono1973 I know what you mean. I think a big part of it is the lack of news on the Virtual Console for Switch. Once the VC arrives, that would cater for the demand of older titles.
I was hoping the speculation of a Zelda 2 remake would amount to something. Its the one game in the series I could just never jive with and I would welcome a very well done remake for the Switch that gives that particular chapter in the series brand new life
@r4builder I never understood this logic, its almost like saying a piece of art from a Vincent Van Gogh collection would be worthless now because its "old".
Games just like art are works of creativity, when done right, are fantastic and timeless, when done wrong look like a mess.
We gamers are so wrapped up in our want for more newer stimulation we forget the need to appreciate the effort put forward by developers even in games that are "old", because ones creativity never gets "old", it never dies and we should never complain that it "costs too much" because its "old".
By your logic a piece of art by Picasso should be worthless now because its "old".
Maybe this is just me but i genuinely feel this is a deeply flawed logic that not just gamers but consumers all seem to suffer from, a want for more and a need for the next new thing. Its created a generation of people that cannot stop and appreciate someones effort and creativity, no matter how old it is.
@frogopus @JHDK one way i always imagined them possibly doing it was making the right analog stick control the sword. since there was no right analog stick on Wii it could possibly work? with a stab being clicking the stick in? of course that would mean no camera controls.
Please no, I want a new 2D Zelda!
@nocdaes i think the demand comes from the fact that many games these days are just not on the same level of the games in the 7th and 6th gen, it just seems like the golden age of gaming has gone by, people want more games from those generations and developers just follow the money, a simple search on the top 20 - 50 games of all time and you will see what i mean, 95% are from pre 2012.
This is just one list voted by consumers, while cant be taken as 100% accurate, when looked at along side other lists, a trend can be seen, the best games we have ever seen have already been released and judging by the lack of good games going forward, this is unlikely to change

@Razer I love classic gaming, as do my kids. I have dozens of xbox 360 games that we play regularly. I have a Sega Saturn that I use regularly. I haven't purchased and NES classic (or SNES classic), but I don't begrudge them being released. Enabling a new generation to play games is great. Making them pay full AAA price for a game already in the bargain basement on other readily available platforms, not so much. Using the SNES classic as an example, you are getting 20+ AAA games for $80 along with hardware. Granted emulation isn't porting, but if done correctly they both require a level of development work to make them run smoothly. I have repurchased many classic 16-bit games for various systems (xbox, Android, Steam), but I sure didn't pay $50 a piece for them (original AAA money for Sonic 2/3, DuckTales, etc)
There is a place for ports/emulated re-releases, but not in the AAA price category/discussion.
I make a caveat of if Sega would get off their butts and do actual rereleases of Saturn games I'd likely pay full AAA for them, but they'd have to remake them from the ground up, not just port them.
@MoonKnight7 most of my time with the 3ds was dedicated to completing every atlus rpg released on it. 😂
@r4builder Yeah i will concede on that particular point, to charge the same price for a game that clearly has a lot less effort put into it than an AAA game is corporate greed at its finest.
Like Skyrim's price did make me double take, more expensive than when it was first released on the 360 and ps3 -.-.
There is defo a point to be made on price.
@Razer Age/nostalgia plays a big part, alongside the "play anywhere" premise of the Switch. If you were a kid in the 80s, then chances are you have disposable income for retro games today, and likely no time to play them outside of your commute to work. Also, don't forget the games industry is in growth. It's easy to dismiss the new COD, FIFA, AC, Destiny etc. but it's making a lot of people a lot of money.
@faint
Nothing wrong with that!
@nocdaes this is 100% on the money, that play anywhere factor is the main reason i am getting a Switch as soon as i have gotten over the insanely huge cost of buying my house boat.
I do not own a TV on my boat, but i have always been a gamer, so the Switch is actually a god send to me, when i can get one.
Aside from this though, i really do feel that nostalgia only goes so far in that i get nostalgic when i see turok but id never rate it the best game ever made, now i actually hate FF games in all shapes and forms but i wouldn't be stupid and put my bet on turok knowing full well how loved FF games are. Not all gamers from the 80's own rose tinted glasses, but this could just be me lol.
@Razer
Dang, yea - sounds like Switch is perfect for you!
I loved that game on the 3DS. I is one of my favorite games ever but I don't think I would buy it again on the Switch... I rather have a new 2D Zelda game than a 3DS remake.
WiiU ports are different, many people didn't get to play those games so it makes sense to port the more iconic games, but 3DS games is another matter entirely. Anyone can get the game on the 3DS quite cheap, what's the point of porting to the Switch?
I think this rumor has little credibility.
I reddit so it must be true!!!
I welcome a Switch port of this any day. If Nintendo is generous they would make an HD remastered compilation of this alongside Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Track for Switch, that I would love to see. If I could play Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Track in HD without having to use a freaking pen, I'll be very happy.
The Wii U ports on Switch make sense because it was an unpopular system with some really great games many people missed out on, but most Nintendo fans had a 3DS at some point and don't need to buy it again unless they're making significant changes to the game (in which case they wouldn't be asking to quote old reviews).
Of course Breath of the Wild is a much better videogame all around, but A Link Between Worlds perfects the top-down 2D Zelda formula, and is my favorite Zelda game of the entire franchise. I feel so strongly about this game, and yet have tons of friends who still haven't touched it. Maybe a Switch release would lasso in a few more folks to experience this gem of a game.
Reddit speculates everything.
You can't go taking everything you see on Reddit as article worthy.
They just released a huge Zelda title on Switch. They are not going to release another one so soon. Whatever this is, it's going to be for 3DS. We've even heard leaks of a Link's Awakening reimagining as the final Zelda sendoff for 3DS. Seeing how similar that would be to Link Between Worlds, it would make sense to cite reviews for it. But I'm not buying into a Switch version. The game was also dependent on the 3D, which is exclusive to 3DS.
For people like me who never owned a 3DS, I want 3DS games ported to Switch.
Especially Link Between Worlds, Samus Returns, and Starfox 3D.
The thing this really needs is a port/remaster of Skyward Sword. I think Skyward Sword was great, but many players found the game frustrating because the Wii Motion Plus was not quite up to the task. Now that they have the joycons they should be able to do it right.
@noobish_hat I hate the 3D effects and always play 3DS games in 2D. Link Between Worlds works just fine in 2D.
@riki_sidekicks
The motion plus worked phenomenally well, and the 3D really make ALBW awesome.
Anyways, I just hope this means that there will be another run of Nintendo Selects in the US, hopefully with ALBW and Fire Emblem Awakening on the list.
Me thinks the selects release lies at the end of this road. But if it were to come to Switch I’d goron roll right into it on a day one purchase.
Nintendo being weird and random as usual, nothing to see here, move along.
Probably for the Nintendo Selects line in America.
Minish Cap, please! I still rate this as one of the best 2D Zelda games and feel that because it came out at the end of the GBA and the start of the DS, it was largely ignored. I know it was ported to the Wii U but I can only play portables, so I want Minish Cap on the Switch. Easy money for Nintendo.
Although a remake of Link's Awakening would be awesome on the Switch....
And ... why not remake the Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages? Very cool games but could profit from an upgrade to the art style of Link Between Worlds.
On the other hand, even though it was a snooze for me, I suspect that at some point they will want to port Skyward Sword. I don't know why, that is the only Zelda I can't get in to. Even Zelda II is more interesting.
But as soon as I finish Breath of the Wild, I want more Zelda. Personally I would love Wind Waker the most. But Breath of the Wild will keep me occupied for several months (at least all those years playing World of Warcraft now come in handy for Breath of the Wild).
This is more than likely just for the Nintendo Selects line in North America. As far as I know, A Link Between Worlds is out of print here. Nintendo will probably roll out more Selects titles this year with a new printing of ALBW.
I'm still banking on Skyward Sword coming to the Switch and then some kind of Zelda HD pack with Wind Waker and Twilight Princess in one box.
I'd be open to getting the top 3D games of the 3DS with better graphics on the Switch.
But first I want a Skyward Sword HD remaster!
I would not buy it on switch. I played the 3ds version and I don’t see anything wrong on it. So no need to have it on switch. Maybe a new 2d/2,5d zelda instead?
new zelda for 3ds would be nice... just me? ok....
@JHDK It really needs to come to Switch. It was an HD game held back by limited hardware. If you ever want an idea of what it could look like in HD, or 4K, look it up online. Seriously, the game is stunning even when you do pull off your rose-tinted nostalgia glasses.
First, to get this out of the way: If you haven't played A Link Between Worlds, go and buy/play it now.
While I think a Selects release in North America is more likely, I wouldn't say no to a Switch port of this game. It's definitely one of the better Zelda games out there.
Seeing as how this game is IMPOSSIBLE to find here in any retail location in the US a budget selects option would be more than welcome. I still haven’t found a copy myself.
Id prefer Skyward Sword...not that SS is better than ALTTP, but there is no coincidence thta ALTTP was released on 3DS, since the game really uses the 3D effect and depth of the field for its own good and various things, so that is why i dont think ALTTP would work on Switch as good as on 3DS......
@Mopati Thing is, another BOTW sized main game is going to take some years to make. And while no doubt spin offs are in development, "HD Remasters" also have to fill that gap for those with another Zelda itch.
Of course, you don't HAVE to rebuy a game you've already played, its up to the gamer to decide if the upgrade and experience again is worth it.
Easily the worst game in the Zelda series. Of course, a "bad" Zelda game is still a good game.
@Angelic_Lapras_King I don't think BOTW have anything to do with the not-3D games of the series.
@Crono1973
that's odd. A LOT of these games 'ported' would be new to me and i'm assuming a lot of people with switches as well.
i have too many games on my switch to play right now so not sure where the library is bad. sure there are multiplats (or ports as you i guess call em) but they're new to me if i haven't played em.
@8-Bit_Zorldo agreed. We can get ports and new games at the same time. I'm all for ports and HD remasters. Not to mention theres Switch players that never got the chance to play 3DS games like A Link Between worlds, and even more so, a lot of great Wii / Wii U games that id love to see get a new coat of paint... bring it all on, new & old!
@sword_9mm If you want to play 3DS games, get a 3DS and enjoy a much better library than Switch has.
Everyone old enough to read this site "had the chance" to play 3DS games and, yes, even Wii U games. Both were mainstream 8th generation consoles on the worldwide market for 5 years, and the former isn't even out of print yet. The only people who didn't get to play these games are the people who chose not to buy them. Contrast that with Mother 3 (Japan only), Virtual Boy Wario Land (a great game on a truly short-lived console), or the e-Reader levels of Super Mario Bros. 3 (which are finally available on the Wii U Virtual Console). ALBW, Smash U, and all the other games regularly portbegged for fall into none of these categories.
@Crono1973
agree to disagree.
i don't play games to get 'portable' versions of them. guess you loved hyrule warriors on the ds? i'll take a wiiU port on the switch.
@MarcelRguez Reddit. The Home of Wonders.
@sword_9mm A Link Between Worlds is a 3DS game.
I freaking love this game! It’s my favourite 3DS game and one of my favourite Zelda’s!
It would be so cool to play on Switch but I find it really good to use the 3D effect with.
@JHDK yes, please.
I'm betting on a selects re release for NA. It always boggled my mind why it took so long for NoA to do thise, especially considering that Albw has been a select in other regions for a while. It's stuff like this that makes me wish Nintendo would announce things like this across all regions uniformly rather than make different regions pay vastly different prices for the same game
Haven’t played it yet. Of course I’d rather see it on Switch. I would definitely get it on Switch. If it’s on 3DS but cheaper than today, I may get it anyways.
It'll be for the sale or for the Selects range; nothing to see here.
What I will say however is that Nintendo are still keen on 2D Zelda games, as stated by the producer of Zelda (I forget his name). So there's nothing ruling out ports or new 2D titles in the future for Switch.
“Reddit Wonders […]”, then embeds Twitter post. Right.
Second flaw: it’s not Reddit that wonders. Is it a news outlet? No, a forum. It’s Reddit’s users that wonder!
