Enter the vivid and cinematic world of Faloiv in the first book of this dazzling YA sci-fi/fantasy series, perfect for fans of Carve the Mark, Red Rising, and These Broken Stars.

Octavia has always dreamed of becoming a whitecoat, one of the prestigious N’Terra scientists who study the natural wonders of Faloiv. So when the once-secretive labs are suddenly opened to students, she leaps at the chance to see what happens behind their closed doors.

However, she quickly discovers that all is not what it seems on Faloiv, and the experiments the whitecoats have been doing run the risk of upsetting the humans’ fragile peace with the Faloii, Faloiv’s indigenous people.

As secret after disturbing secret comes to light, Octavia finds herself on a collision course with the charismatic and extremist new leader of N’Terra’s ruling council. But by uncovering the mysteries behind the history she’s been taught, the science she’s lived by, and the truth about her family, she threatens to be the catalyst for an all-out war.

It strikes that perfect balance of great storytelling and hard truthtelling. Jump in and enjoy the ride!” — Daniel José Older, New York Times bestselling author of Shadowshaper

“Olivia A. Cole constructs a future world that is both fascinating and terrifying, hooking you immediately. A must-read!” — Dhonielle Clayton, author of The Belles and the Tiny Pretty Things series

“In a time when books are so often drawn into series, this installment leaves you begging for more. A great science fiction/fantasy addition to any library collection.” — School Library Journal

“This fascinating work of science fiction explores the interactions between humans and aliens, with humans as the aggressors, prone to violence with a short-sighted ‘humans first’ mentality that does not bode well for their continued existence on their host planet. Impressive worldbuilding, well-developed characters, and nonstop action.” — Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA)

“Heart rates of readers will rise as Cole methodically weaves answers into the story, all the while throwing more questions into the mix.“ — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

Stunning Sci-Fi
Reread: Can a book be better the second time you read it? Yes. Yes, it can! There’s so much more I want to know, and I’m glad I have book 2, An Anatomy of Beasts, on hand. This book is one of my new favorite sci-fi novels! Just saying. It’s amazing.I devoured the book in one sitting and not just because I was stuck on an airplane. If I wanted to read or do something else, I would have. Nine-hour flights tend to provide movies and music, but I couldn’t get enough of A Conspiracy of Stars. I was actually sad when it ended.“But home isn’t just a memory, I’ve decided: it’s knowledge, knowing where you belong and where you fit in. [...] This is home.”Wow, so I haven’t related to a fictional character in a while. (Pfft! I totally did three books ago.) Perhaps what I mean to say is that the exploration of the concept of home was refreshing. When most people ask me where I’m from, what they really mean is “Where is home?” But having moved around my whole life, for me it’s not always that simple. Home for me is where my suitcase is. In that sense, I relate with Octavia, the narrator. This, too, is my home. The plot was a little more slow-paced than some books, but I actually like it that way. Slower books can be pretty enjoyable, especially when they focus on excellent character development like this one. Perhaps one of my favorite themes no matter the book was also featured in this one: empathy is a gift, not a weakness. And the world-building was amazing! At first, the author, Cole, seems to throw terms at me, and I felt like I got tossed into a hailstorm with no context. Then the characters took me by the hand and guided me along, explaining things like the well-informed scientists they were. For the most part, the characters were well-developed. There’s bound to be at least one mad scientist, right? *sigh* Oh, well. I did like how smart the Octavia and her friends were. When the title finally made sense, I was immensely pleased. My main complaint was the book’s predictability. I was hoping for at least one twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. But when I was right, I silently cheered, then the book ended and how dare it! I. Need. More.In all, I gave A Conspiracy of Stars 4/5 stars for excellent world building, themes, and character but some predictable elements. I’d recommend it to sci-fi fans, especially those who liked Ender’s Saga (e.g. Ender's Game ) and the Divergent trilogy. I know I said this already, but I can’t wait for the next one!

Olivia Cole has produced a science fiction novel that is a very good introduction for her to the YA format. I enjoyed it and could think of four or five people I would recommend it to right away. That is my highest praise.

The plot is varied, covering a lot ifinteresting topics, including budding romance and parental approval, imaginative, and compelling. The pacing of the plot is good. The reader sees things gradually unfold at a logical and measured rate that does not become forced.

Characters are very well rounded. There are no stock characters that the writer has fallen back on. The main characters are not perfect and also arenotine-sided. The reader connects with them.

Ms Cole has created a believable world for her story. There is enough description to engage the reader but does not bog down the pacing

First person present tense is easy to write in but hard to write well. Ms Cole has done well. She does not force readers to feel artificial or forced emotions through this choice of style and tone.

All in all, I think this book is a good addition to my library and I will be loaning my copy out several times. Great job!

Excellent read with great world-building as well as a beautiful tribute to Octavia Butler. I often wonder at the "YA" label, in that my nearly-40-year-old self enjoys just as much "YA" as I do any other type of fiction. Don't let labels deter or distract you from an excellent read.

I hope Ms Cole doesn't keep Part Two from us for too long; leaving us with such a breathless final 20-30 pages as she did, she better be sitting at her laptop polishing a draft as I write this review!

I loved this book! Right from the first page I quickly began to appreciate the rich world of Faloiv that this author created so vividly. I enjoyed the full development of the beautifully diverse characters; I felt as though I was sharing every experience right alongside of Octavia the heroine and her friends Alma and Rondo. The creatures on the world of Faloiv are written with such imagination and unique design that I could easily envision them on a big screen! The parallels to many of today's challenges in our own world are compelling and thought provoking.

The villains in Octavia's life display an astonishing lack of empathy and compassion for other people and creatures on their world of Faloiv. In their quest to return to the days (planet) of earlier times they choose to disregard nature, science and new truths all in the name of self-interest.

This book flows easily and the suspenseful and enthralling plot makes it a real page turner. I hope the sequel is right on the heels of this great read because it is a cliffhanger of the best kind!

Slower moving which some might not be okay with but interesting questions regarding colonialism and scientific discovery. Gave Avatar vibes though that might be a slight disservice as it isn't on the same tier.

I love this book! From page one I was hooked on this new world.
Octavia is the strong female, genius level lead we've been waiting on. As she navigates the world of Faloiv with her friends Alma and Rondo trying to uncover the secret of the planet.
The book flows easily and the suspense builds at a perfect pace!
I don't want to say too much without giving too much away but within these pages, I laughed, I cried, I screamed and I died at the last line!
I'm currently waiting for the next book!

An excellent start to a new series. I can't wait to read the next stage in O's and Faloiv's growth and development. Olivia A. Cole has created a strong narrator -- a heroine the reader actually wants to meet and chat with over a cup of coffee. She has also done a superb job of combining science with romance with politics with action with fantasy with family struggles with ... (you get the drift). I was quite taken with her world and its creatures. In addition, Ms. Cole has accomplished what all great writers do; she has found a way to tell truths about our world and times that leaves readers better for having experienced her text. Bravo!

I have been reading fantasy since discovering A Wrinkle in Time at age 12, 50 years of diving deep into new worlds. I find I have very little patience for authors who don’t take time to build language, culture, and a sense of place in their world. Olivia Cole does just that. In addition, her character development is golden. I read as much for character as for plot, and both were very satisfying. After reading only a little while, I started looking around for the characters, as though they were real people. That is the sign that I have become truly immersed in the world. I am delighted to have another author to seek out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful mix of Sci-fi and Fantasy perfect for both adult and young adult readers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2018
A Conspiracy of Stars is a wonderful reflection of our society and how the weaponisation of science is a dangerous road. Cole knits together both sci-fi and fantasy to give us a novel that pushes the boundaries of realistic possibilities in all the best ways.

The novel follows sixteen year old Octavia English, the daughter of two scientists, on a distant planet after their ship crash landed years ago. She has only ever lived on Faloiv, unlike her parents who remember earth, but when things begin to not add up she and her friends dig beneath the surface to find out what is going on. Octavia has a scientific mind and as the pressure to conform to her scientific community is piled on she realises that perhaps there is more to life than working in the 'zoo'.

I loved that the main three characters were all POC. It's so important for young people of colour to have proper representation and to be able to see themselves in a story where their likenesses are badass and powerful. A whole range of emotions are beautifully written, and refreshingly the romance isn't the main focus of the story. As the story progressed and I began to get attached to the Octavia, I found myself getting angry or upset alongside her as she faced the truth of her people. It builds quite slowly, but worldbuilding takes time so I'm not surprised, but Octavia and her world get their claws in you, and by the time you realise it's too late, you're hooked.

Cole wrote a novel that takes a sidelong glance at the politics of our time and of our past, highlighting the greed and selfishness of the elite, as well as how easy it can be to not see your own privilege. And yet opens the door to light and hope just in time for the novel to end.

I read A Conspiracy of Stars in three sittings over two days and I'm ready to go back to the beginning and read it all over again. The sequel, so far unnamed, is due for release next year some time, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it and dive into Octavia's world once again.

I really enjoyed this. Yeah, it ain't gonna be everyone's cup of tea. It's a bit slow, the plot twist is a little obvious, but I found it just so refreshing and interesting to read. Forty years humanity has been on Faloiv. Forty years of the older adults dreaming of finding their way home, whilst raising children who only ever see this planet as their home. Such a way to divide a people into different perspectives.

Of course, the "bad guys" became way more obviously bad and completely ramping it up into straight up pure evil by the end, but throughout they felt understandable. The way generations conflicted - Octavia straight up disgusted by the idea of eating animal flesh, the adults who find it a welcome relief to do something similar to what they remember.

Also Octavia's dream to become a scientist, which is so interesting and unique in these kinds of books. Her strong friendships, her love for her family and the pain she feels as her parents drift apart. The way what I originally thought was happening to Octavia turned out to be not quite right. Loved it.
