TL;DR
  • Some Google Pixel and Pixel 2 users have experienced device lag after the latest update
  • Google has reportedly confirmed that this only occurs when sideloading the update, rather than installing it OTA
  • Those who are affected by the problem can resolve it simply by restarting their device

It’s been a turbulent time for the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL since their release, but this latest problem seems to be only a minor blip. This was brought to our attention by 9to5Google and it follows the January security update.

This began rolling out to the devices in the last couple of days, but some owners of the Pixel devices (first and second generation) have discussed problems with slow response times and lagging after installing the patches.

Among the reports are claims that apps can take a second or two to launch and that returning to the home screen is slower than it was previously. The solution to these issues, however, appears to be simple: just restart the device after installing the update.

This seems to have been an effective cure so far, while Google has since confirmed (presumably directly to 9to5Google) that this problem only occurs when users sideload the update. Those installing it OTA shouldn’t have any such troubles.

If you’ve experienced this issue, try restarting your handset to see if fixes it.
