Dane Moore: Ryan Saunders on D’Angelo Russell’s injury: “It’s a big loss for us. It’s something that there was a lot of diligence. Everybody was proactive and gathering opinions and seeing what the best course of action for D’Angelo was in the short term and long term. And this was it.”

D’Angelo Russell, still feeling the after-effects of a scary collision on Dec. 29, sat out a third straight game. But that should be all. Kerr said he expects Russell to return Monday in Sacramento.
Logan Murdock: Steve Kerr on D’Angelo Russell: “Not sure how long he’ll be out… the morning after his injury he felt some pain. So yesterday when we flew he did not practice. So he’ll sit out tonight and re-evaluate tomorrow.”
Russell rose to his feet, waved off the stretcher and slowly walked to the locker room. His night was presumed to be over, with a medical update expected either after the game or Sunday. Instead, he emerged from the locker room before the third quarter ended. The Warriors deemed he had only a right shoulder contusion. He started the fourth quarter on the floor and even tied his career high with a ninth 3. “I’m good,” Russell said.
It isn’t expected to be an issue moving forward. “Happy he didn’t leave on a stretcher and then come back in,” Draymond Green said. “I would’ve lost all respect. We’ve had some guys do shit like that in this league.”
Anthony Slater: D’Angelo Russell is likely to return tonight in Charlotte after a 9-game absence. Draymond Green will return after a 1-game rest. That’ll give the Warriors 11 healthy bodies. “I don’t know what to do,” Kerr joked.

Warriors guard D’Angelo Russell, who suffered a sprained right thumb during last night’s game against the Boston Celtics at Chase Center, underwent an MRI last night. The MRI confirmed the sprain. D’Angelo Russell moved a step closer to returning from arthroscopic knee surgery when he was assigned to the Long Island Nets for a full practice Monday morning before being recalled after the workout. Coach Kenny Atkinson called it “good news” for Russell and the Nets. “It was a full out practice,” Atkinson said. “So he’s getting close. It’s [Tuesday] and what does it look like? Just get feedback on where he is after a tough practice.”
“Yes, I’d like to see him in some simulated game action,” Atkinson said. “But it’s also when that performance team comes in and the coaches and say, ‘Hey man, this is the day.’ Then we’ll go for it . . . and obviously D’Angelo. That’s an important part of it.”
Brian Lewis: D’Angelo Russell just got his first game action in months. A technical foul on the bench with 7:56 left in the third. #Nets
Atkinson said whenever Russell does return, he’ll likely ease back in at first. “D’Angelo will come back progressively, so what does that look like? Really, I’m looking at what’s best for him. Is it best to start him? Those are discussions to be had going forward,” Atkinson said, who hasn’t talked to Spencer Dinwiddie about how Russell’s return will impact him.
“That’ll be a conversation when the time comes. But it was projected to be his and Jeremy Lin’s team at the start of the season, and you’d think it’ll be something similar when they come back,” Dinwiddie said. “If that’s the way it shakes out then that’s going to be a lot of fun for me and a massive increase to what I was expecting at the start of the season.
Brian Lewis: D’Angelo Russell on being back on the court practicing after knee surgery: “It was tough. First time back in what feels like forever; it’s amazing.” #Nets @D’Angelo Russell
Brian Lewis: D’Angelo Russell on practicing w/ Long Island #Nets: “I’ve been out for a while, so just getting out there with the G League team – they were amazing; they were going 100 mph – it was great. Just getting that sweat again is what I’ve been looking for.”
Adrian Wojnarowski: D’Angelo Russell is practicing with Nets G League team today, league source tells ESPN. He’s been out for several weeks with knee injury.
D’Angelo Russell, who hasn’t played since mid-November due to arthroscopic right knee surgery, is progressing, according to Atkinson. Last night, a video surfaced, suggesting that Russell lipped the words ‘two weeks’ in a conversation with Kyrie Irving. It could’ve meant he’ll be ready in two weeks, could’ve meant that they’ll be going bowling in two weeks… no one knows. Atkinson claims he did not see the video, and says there’s no timetable on the star guard.
But coach Kenny Atkinson declined to provide specifics about Russell’s status before the Nets ended a five-game road trip with a tough 108-105 loss to the Celtics Sunday night. “He’s progressing along with our schedule,” Atkinson said. “I’d just say he’s working his tail off. I was watching him in the gym yesterday. It’s an arduous process. He’s putting in a ton of time, he’s putting in full days. It’s been amazing to see his work ethic. He’s been great.”
“The plan definitely is to see D’Angelo again. I wouldn’t tell you when exactly but hopefully it’s sooner rather than later. He’s progressing well,” Marks said. “He’s five weeks post-op now. I think the timeline was between seven, eight weeks depending on how things go. So we’re still a couple of weeks away.”
D’Angelo Russell still has no timeline for returning from arthroscopic knee surgery. “No update as of now. I know he was working with our performance group today, working on his core strength, hamstring strength, but it’s hard for me to put a stage on it,” Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said Wednesday. “He’s not running yet.”
Russell said he has been working his hamstrings, glutes, core and other muscles. “It’s been going well. Every day has been a grind. I’d rather be back sooner than later. … It’s a day-to-day process and I’m attacking it every day,” Russell said.
D’Angelo Russell: “I’m doing a lot of stuff. I’m in the weight room. They have a lot of stuff planned out for me. If I’m running one day, I may be walking the next. It’s all a plan. I’ve done a lot of things to test it. A full-out sprint, I’m two weeks out of surgery so I don’t think that’d be the smartest thing to do. But there’s been other ways to test it.”
D’Angelo Russell doesn’t have any idea when he’ll be ready to get back on the court. But the injured point guard joined his teammates on the current trip, with Russell, coach Kenny Atkinson and the other Nets saying it can only be a good thing to have him around, involved and engaged during his rehab. “I’m feeling better and better every day. So yeah, it’s cool,” said Russell, who saw the Nets bet the Grizzlies 98-88 on Sunday at FedEx Forum. “I don’t know [the timeline]. Really, honestly I’m just trying to stay healthy and get as strong as I can before I get back out on the floor. It’s definitely not something I want to rush. …. I’m not really forcing anything, just doing what the trainers tell me day in and day out and go from there, see how I feel every day.”
“Honestly I’m just trying to stay healthy and get as strong as I can before I get back out on the floor,” Russell told the media. “It’s definitely not something I want to rush, however that may go. I’m not really forcing anything, just doing what the trainers and stuff tell me day-in and day-out and go from there, see how I feel every day.”
Russell had arthroscopic surgery on Nov. 17 to remove loose bodies in his right knee. He insisted it had nothing to do with the 11 games he missed last season because of soreness in the same knee, and said he can come away from this stronger. “It’s just more of a strength factor for me now. It’s not a reoccurring injury. It’s not something that affected me from last year,” Russell said. “So I’m just trying to go in every day and get my strength in and all that right before I go back on the court.”
Brian Lewis: Injured D’Angelo Russell made the road trip w/ his #Nets teammates, saying it’s important for team chemistry to have everybody around. Atkinson said he especially likes to have his point guards around to get on the same page. @D’Angelo Russell
Anthony Puccio: Sean Marks spoke with D’Angelo Russell: “It’s definitely frustrating for D’Angelo. I was just with him before. He’s going into this as another challenge. He knows he’ll bounce back from this and we have no doubts in our mind that he’ll be better and stronger than he was before.”
Michael Scotto: Nets say D’Angelo Russell had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today. GM Sean Marks said, “It’s an arthroscopic surgery, so the plan would be for him to return this season.” Marks said there’s “probably a pretty good chance” Brooklyn applies for a disabled player exception.
Bobby Marks: No roster relief for Brooklyn with the D’Angelo Russell left knee surgery. The Nets could still apply for the Disabled Player Exception (Jeremy Lin injury) but must have a roster spot open. Brooklyn currently has 15 players under contract.
Michael Gallagher: Nets Injury Report for tomorrow night’s game vs. Utah: D’Angelo Russell (left knee contusion) is OUT.

Derrick White will seek a contract extension with Boston this summer
Keeping his five best players together for the long term is going to get increasingly difficult (as in expensive) for Brad Stevens and the Celtics after the forthcoming offseason, when Jayson Tatum signs his own $315 million contract extension after Jaylen Brown scored a nearly $290 million extension last summer. We must also factor in that Derrick White, according to league sources, will be seeking a contract extension this summer.
Warriors moving on from Kevon Looney?
On a recent episode of the Warriors Plus Minus podcast, Tim Kawakami of The Athletic said that he thinks the Dubs are going to let veteran big man Kevon Looney go to save some money. “I think the likeliest situation is that he’s cut, and he makes $3 million from them, and he’s off looking for another spot,” Kawakami said. Looney played just 16 minutes per game this past season, which is the least amount go minutes that he has played since the 2019-20 season.

Someone is a huge Tim Duncan fan because they spent thousands of dollars at auction on his game-worn 2013 NBA Finals jersey. Goldin recently had up for auction the San Antonio Spurs legend’s NBA Finals jersey (white Association) that he wore for games 3-5 against the Miami Heat.
