Product Description

Perky, overachieving Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) gets on the nerves of history teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) to begin with, but after she launches her campaign for high-school president and his personal life starts to fall apart, things spiral out of control. In Alexander Payne's satire ELECTION, the teacher becomes unhealthily obsessed with cutting his student down to size, covertly backing a spoiler candidate to stop her from steamrolling to victory, and putting in motion a series of dirty tricks and reckless promises with uncanny real-world political parallels. Adapting a then-unpublished novel by Tom Perrotta, Payne grounds the absurdity of his central dynamic in the recognizable the setting is his hometown of Omaha, and the accomplished cast is rounded out with nonprofessionals and distills his closely observed take on deeply flawed humanity to its bitter but stealthily sympathetic essence.

Short & Sweet: Criterion Collection delivers the goods as usual. Lots of special features. Crystal clear image & sound. Plot: A teacher specializing in ethics, morals, & political science struggles with all of those things at his school. His friend, (another teacher), sleeping with an ambitious & obnoxious student, cheating on his wife, & interfering with the student election. Crazy comedy ensues. Definitely worth the purchase of this disc for your collection.

A superb dark comedy from Alexander Payne with sharp writing, authentic atmosphere, and Reese Witherspoon's best performance. One of the best movies from the 90s, in my opinion. Visit my site for a full review!

I was hesitant to even watch this film, but after finally getting it over with, I totally understand why this part of the Criterion Collection.
A perfect example of how to find the hilarious within moments of dramatic intensity; more so than Ghost World. A very funny movie without becoming silly or slapstick.
For those that enjoy films like Office Space, Idiocracy or Big Lebowski; you're doing yourself a disservice by skipping this.
