New York Times Bestseller
By the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Strange Planet and 99 Stories I Could Tell!
Living in New York City for five years as a transplant from Ohio, illustrator and T-shirt designer Nathan Pyle was fascinated by the unique habits and unspoken customs New Yorkers follow to make life bearable in a city with 8 million people (and seemingly twice the number of tourists). In NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette, Pyle reveals the secrets and unwritten rules for living in and visiting New York including the answers to such burning questions as, how do I hail a cab? What is a bodega? Which way is Uptown? Why are there so many doors in the sidewalk? How do I walk on an escalator? Do we need be touching right now? Where should I inhale or exhale while passing sidewalk garbage? How long should I honk my horn? If New York were a game show, how would I win? What happens when I stand in the bike lane? Who should get the empty subway seats? How do I stay safe during a trash tornado? Each tip is a little story illustrated in simple black and white drawings.

From the Back Cover
Living in New York City for five years as a transplant from Ohio, illustrator and T-shirt designer Nathan Pyle was fascinated by the unique habits and unspoken customs New Yorkers follow to make life bearable in a city with 8 million people (and seemingly twice the number of tourists). Nathan decided to draw his favorite tips and etiquette lessons and post them on the internet, where his 12 original panels went viral immediately and became the basis for this hilarious illustrated book (check out the fully animated ebook, too!).
In NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette, Pyle reveals the secrets and unwritten rules for living in and visiting New York including the answers to such burning questions as, which cabs should I try to hail? What is a bodega? Which way is Uptown? Why are there so many doors in the sidewalk? How do I walk on an escalator? Do we need to be touching right now? Where should I inhale or exhale while passing sidewalk garbage? How long should I honk my horn? If New York were a game show, how would I win? What happens when I stand in the bike lane? Who should get the empty subway seats? How do I stay safe during a trash tornado? Each tip is a little story illustrated in simple black and white drawings.
Visitors and newcomers to New York will love it because the advice is smart, funny, and not condescending. New Yorkers will love it for its strategic and humorous approach to mastering the daily chaos of the city.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2014I've been waiting for this book for some time now. I preordered it on September 4th, 2013, based on some preliminary artwork I'd seen of the project.
I'm into classic graphic novels and illustration (think of old RAW/Spieglman era), and was intrigued by the approach.
I'm also a New Yorker (Bed Stuy denizen at the moment), and have had an interest in street etiquette for a long time; "Move to the side if you're going to stop, nice tourists". I worked on 40th and B-Way for years, and really saw the need for some sort of pamphlet for visitors.
This book exceeded my expectations. It's written with humor and wit, and really captures a lot of what it means to be a New Yorker. I found myself agreeing with and remembering literally ALL of the situations presented in this book. I also saw my failures, and realized that I already knew the rules of the street... it's a GREAT book for both native and toursits.
The illustrations are great. I like the use of black (I'm a Charles Burns fan),
This is a strong first entry from Nathan Pyle; I expect some more amazing work from him in the future. I am now a fan of his work.
5 stars.
(I'd love a hardcover copy, signed by the author.... it'd go into my collection)
;)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2024I was given this book when I first moved to NYC and I give this book to anyone’s moved here. It’s still very relevant to today’s Manhattan lifestyle. Hilarious and useful
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2014I discovered the author through his Facebook page, and knew the book would be perfect for me. I was so sure, I bought two copies.
When they arrived, I sat down next to my sister and we started reading simultaneously-- I've been living in NYC almost ten years, she's been here 6 months. We both laughed and went, "Ohhh, yes!" and pointed out little bits to each other.
Then I put one copy in our guest room. Sure thing, the next guests we had were delighted with the book and mentioned how funny and helpful it was to them.
I'm just grateful the book is such a quick read, or I'd have to worry about replacing it every time a guest just *had* to finish it and walked off with it. ;)
It's funny, it's useful, the visuals are clear. I'm telling all my other friends-who-host about it, because it makes us look good to have something so thoughtful for our guests. ;)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2020This book is genuinely meant to help people new to NY. I bought it, hoping it was funny enough for general reading. I would say it's interesting and maybe worth reading once, but not worth buying. If I ever go to NY though, I will know the etiquette. The basic message is this: NY is so crowded that you must always assume people need to be where you are and so you must be mindful and stay out of the way. Be assertive and don't take other people's assertive requests personally. There, now you don't even need to read the book unless you want to. It is somewhat humorous.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2024I bought two, one for myself and the other for a friend who LOVES New York City. Good advice (some of it tongue-in-cheek) for the visitor, with laughs included.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2019I got this for a friend who was moving to NYC but had it shipped to me so I put it in a package. Thought I would check it out first because I knew she wouldn't have much room..... so glad I did! What a gem!! This is hugely funny and clever and yet, a really helpful little book that presents tips in a way calculated to make you remember them. Would definitely recommend to people going to NYC on their own.
Also, this dude does the hilarious Strange Planet comics so will definitely be ordering that when it comes out too.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2014The previously unwritten rules of surviving New York City have been brilliantly captured in Nathan Pyle's poignant illustrations. Pyle uses humor to offer very real and relevant advice for those both visiting and living in New York. I've been living in the city for about 3 years and found most of Pyle's tips relevant to experiences I've had myself. Pyle balances clever commentary on the everyday frustrations of city life with encouragement and a positive outlook.
If you or someone you know either lives in New York or plans to visit/move, I highly recommend buying this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2017Short book, cute and correct. If you are from NY you will get it, but it's not particularly funny or worth to give as a gift. It's ok for yourself and you are not expecting anything you don't already know as a New Yorker. It could have some value for a tourist. Easy to read, almost childlike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy recomendable

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Guide
If you are looking for an indepth guide, this isn't for you, but if you want a few hints and tips on how to survive a trip NYC, or even if you are moving to the Big Apple, then this perfect. Humorous and well illustrated, it is full of great ways to get along in the big city, and have a good time, without annoying the locals. Highly recommended.
