- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 February 2019If you’re in the mood for an easy going romp, that puts its characters through the wringer, but is never without hope or a sense of fun then buckle up.
Michael Moreci’s Black Star Renegades is pacy, and involving. There are times that some elements feel skirted over but, knowing that this is the first in a planned series, this can pretty much be regarded as World building that will obviously be repaid in future volumes.
The writing is evocative, and I was able to visualise pretty much all the scenes, action and otherwise, as I devoured the novel. The characters are flawed and involving. The enigmatic Rokura, the mysterious all powerful weapon that drives the plot is more than just a McGuffin and actually seems to challenge those that covet it in ways I suspect we are only beginning to get a glimpse of.
There was more than enough involving character work, and exciting action pieces, to make me wish that the upcoming sequel was already released.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 June 2019I pre-ordered this book a while back and had it sitting around waiting its turn to get read. I did have high hopes for this one, as I love pulpy sci fi and this seemed to promise just that. I got about a third of the way through and frankly, I got bored. Its pretty average on the whole with the main hero being not all that interesting & He's not very likable as a character overall. I found it very difficult to care about the man whatsoever. Or for that matter the rest of the story. The pacing felt off at times and the dialogue was clunky in places. I found it jarring at times. In the end I put it down, I didn't feel that it was worth the effort to work through.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 May 2018I was recommended this on the basis of it being a love letter to the sci-fi adventures that I enjoy reading and watching. There are several elements that are therefore similar to many other works in the genre (evil empire with an unstoppable weapon, starfighters, droids, the resistance, a new hope, etc), however, Moreci does make some attempt to bring something new to the table.
I really wanted to like this novel and there were some cool elements to it but, unfortunately, it is let down by some very average writing. The dialogue, in particular, is poor on several occasions and took me out of what was going on. I also felt that while this is the first book in the series, I didn’t get enough character work to really make me care about the protagonists and their relationships were bland.
Overall, it is an enjoyable and easy read, but there wasn't enough in it to make me want to strap-in for another adventure in this galaxy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rollicking Homage to All That We Love About Pop Sci-Fi
Black Star Renegades is a fast-paced, passionate ride through everything we love about popular sci-fi. Moreci captures the feeling we get from nostalgic franchises while crafting a new world and cast from the ground up. If you’re looking for a page-turner or the kind of story that would have killed as a mid-high-budget movie in the late eighties, Black Star Renegades is your book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun!
Unapologetically a love story and homage to Star Wars, this is a great intro to a fun universe that seems well thought out and brilliantly executed. Can’t wait to dig in to Book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars The next big thing in science fiction
Tons of fun and lightning fast. Moves like an epic movie while still building out a great world and awesome characters. Hopefully we get more of this series because I’d love to spend more time in this world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, not amazing, predictable plot.
It's an OK book. The story has potential and it is what it purports to be, a love letter to Star Wars. In my opinion, this is both good and bad, it makes it easy to like the characters and appreciate the parallels to SW, but at the same time it makes it highly predictable. This being said, I will continue to read on as the series continues, the material is good and I'd like to see where the story goes, and how Moreci evolves as a book writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book.
I was already impressed by Michael Moreci’s comic book work, but am blown away by his debut novel. If you love Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, or just good old fashioned break-neck paced action adventure story telling, look no further than BLACK STAR RENEGADES. Such a great read and a fantastic debut novel!
