The Kapoors keep their Christmas brunch tradition alive

The 'khandaan' will have its Christmas brunch, remembering Shashi Kapoor
The Kapoors keep their Christmas brunch tradition alive
The Kapoor khandaan’s Christmas brunch is as legendary as the family itself — it’s been an unwavering tradition all these years. This year, one thought that they would give it amiss, following the family patriarch and veteran actor Shashi Kapoor’s death on December 4. However, it seems that for the Kapoors, the show really does go on. In a bid to honour Shashiji’s wish — that his death should not be mourned and life must be celebrated at all times — his children Kunaal and Sanjna will host the Xmas brunch at his Juhu residence today, which the entire family is expected to attend.

And like every year, an elaborate meal of traditional dishes will be served. “Shashi saab had always wished that the traditions continue, even after he bids adieu to the mortal world. He didn’t want any of us to mourn his death; his desire was to celebrate life in every form. That tradition will continue, and his children will play hosts this year, but I don’t know the exact details of their plan,” says Randhir Kapoor. The famous brunch was initiated decades ago by Shashi’s wife Jennifer Kendal at a time when the Kapoors comprised Raj, Shammi and Shashi, their wives and children. After she lost her battle with cancer in 1984, her husband continued to play the host at the brunches at his residence, which reunited the ever-growing Kapoor family under one roof every Christmas.
Reminiscing the good old times, Randhir continues, “The show must go on, right? For years now, I have had a great time and so has every single member of the Kapoor clan. There’s a lavish spread, great music and lively banter…”
This year is also expected to mark the debut of Taimur — the youngest member of the family — at the brunch, along with his parents, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Bring this up, and Randhir says, “Taimur is still very small. It will take him some time to realise what happens at this family outing and why it’s an important tradition for all of us. He will start enjoying it all when he’s a little older.”
