A 10-year-old Warren County girl remains hospitalized in Jackson after suffering a single gunshot wound to the shoulder Saturday evening.

Officers from the Warren County Sheriff’s department responded to a reported shooting on the 100 block of Carver Drive Saturday at around 7:40 p.m. where they found a 10-year-old girl who had suffered a single gun shot wound to the shoulder, sheriff Martin Pace said.

The victim was transported via Vicksburg Fire Department ambulance to Blare E. Batson Hospital in Jackson. Pace said the wound does not appear to be life threatening.

“The investigation thus far indicates that 9-year-old cousin retrieved a 25-caliber handgun from a closet and fired the weapon striking the child in the shoulder,” Pace said. “The only other person in the home was a 17-year-old who is the brother of the shooter and cousin of the victim.”

Pace said the two younger children had been left in the care of the 17-year-old boy by a woman who is the mother of the 9-year-old boy thought to be the shooter and the aunt of the 10-year-old victim.

“It was believed that she was out of town at the time the shooting occurred,” Pace said.

WCSO detective Stacy Rollison is leading the investigation into the incident. At the conclusion of the sheriff department’s investigation all materials related to the case will be turned over to the Warren County Youth Court, Pace said.

“A report has been made to Child Protective Services,” Pace said. “It is too early in the investigation to comment on whether or not any charges could be filed against the parent.”
