Purchase options and add-ons
Welcome back to Las Anclas, a frontier town in the post-apocalyptic Wild West. In this perilous landscape, a schoolboy can create earthquakes, poisonous cloud vipers flock in the desert skies, and the beaches are stalked by giant mind-controlling lobsters.
The tyrant king Voske has been defeated, but all is not peaceful in Las Anclas. Ross's past comes back to haunt him, Jennie struggles with her new career, Mia faces her fears, Felicite resorts to desperate measures to keep her secrets, Kerry wonders if Las Anclas has really seen the last of her father, and shy Becky Callahan may hold the key to a dangerous mystery.
In Rebel, long-held secrets of past and present are revealed, family ties can strangle as well as sustain, and the greatest peril threatening Las Anclas comes from inside its walls.

About the authors
Sherwood Smith was a teacher for twenty years, teaching history, literature, drama, and dance. Before that she worked in the film industry for several years. She writes science fiction and fantasy for adults and young readers; she has been working on the Sartorias-deles fantasy series all her life.
Readers ask where to start reading in the Sartorias-deles series? That seems a simple question, but it’s not simple to answer when a writer has been at it their entire life. Here are groupings according to possible entry points:
HISTORICAL ARC
“Lily and Crown”
Inda
The Fox
King’s Shield
Treason’s Shore
Time of Daughters (two volumes)
Banner of the Damned
To skip the past and start with the MODERN ERA, there are three starting points (two, if you begin with the children’s stories)
CHILDREN’S STORIES, (written when I was a kid) which introduce many of the characters central to later arcs.
CJ Notebooks
Senrid
Spy Princess
Sartor
All these come together in Fleeing Peace. If you don’t want to wade through all the kids’ stories, I suggest Spy Princess as a starting point, followed by Sartor, then Senrid, A Stranger to Command, then Fleeing Peace.
After that, the Rise of the Alliance begins.
A Stranger to Command is a prequel to Crown Duel, and occurs at the same time as A Sword Named Truth.
The second starting point skips the children’s stories, and shifts to a more adult POV in the RISE OF THE ALLIANCE arc.
A Sword Named Truth
The Blood Mage Texts
The Hunters and the Hunted
Nightside of the Sun
The third starting point would be the ROMANTIC STORIES, which mostly stand alone:
Crown Duel
The Trouble with Kings
Sasharia En Garde
THE NORSUNDER WAR
The Wicked Skill
Ship Without Sails
Marend of Marloven Hess (Oct. 2022)
Seek to Hold the Wind (Nov. 2022)
All Things Betray (Dec. 2022)
A Chain of Braided Silver (Jan. 2023)
The POSTWAR books and stories:
“Beauty” [published in Remalna Stores
“Court Ship” [published in Remalna Stores
Let the Torrent Dance Thee Down (May 2023)
Antiphony (September 2023)
Rachel Manija Brown also writes paranormal romance under the pen name Lia Silver, and the Protection, Inc and Protection, Inc: Defenders series under the name of Zoe Chant.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2017I adore this series, and the much-awaited third volume did not disappoint. Instead of grand adventures, this time it focused mostly on character development, and the various relationships between people living together. Of course there was still mystery, excitement, and all kinds of colorful and strange creatures - but as a whole, this one was about challenges of self and community. The authors approach very heavy topics - domestic abuse, PTSD, grief, prejudice, etc. - with remarkable empathy, and attention to detail. Trauma does not go away magically once it has fulfilled its plot purpose, and relationships do not magically work just because people want them to. I especially love the way various romantic relationships are handled in this series, and this volume's approach to intimacy was nothing short of excellent. Bonus point for actually featuring a believable demisexual character.
I am still in love with the setting of this series as well. Colorful, strange, and often deadly flora and fauna, long-forgotten urban landscapes, and various isolated cities that developed after the world cataclysm in different ways. The new places introduced in this volume were fascinating, and once again made me think of how gorgeous this series would look on a screen (while at the same time I am glad it has no "canon" set of visuals yet). It would be amazing for a high-concept TV series. It would be like Shannara, but good.
This book, just like the previous two volumes, is, above all, likable. Not just because it features a fascinating world and a whole set of likable characters, but also because the whole attitude of the authors - towards representation, towards diversity, towards portraying complex emotions well - makes it precious, and a deliciously immersive read.
I can't wait for the next book. Can we, like, start a petition to expand this universe into more books? Or maybe a tabletop RPG...
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2017Rebel most definitely lived up to the excited expectations I had for it! I don't know what else to say. I have so much love for this series I don't even know if I can do anything but gush about everything that makes them such a joy to read:
-The characters (all complex, all trying their best even when it seems impossible - even the characters that make poor choices do it for reasons that make sense)
-The romantic relationships (also complex and sweet and full of uncertainty and awkwardness in a fantastically relatable way)
-The friendships and family relationships (some lovely and warm some painfully bad but gripping)
-The world with all its amazing variety of Changed flora and fauna - I'm not wishing for an apocalypse but oh to see some of them in person....!
-The food. So lavishly described, so delicious and varied and I can't read about all of those amazing dishes without salivating a bit.
-The hopeful tone, with people creating functional, mostly happy societies despite ever-present dangers and predjudices.
-All of the writing, which just sparkles.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2017This series is literally to die for. It's like X-Men meets post-appacalyptic, but with extra thinking to ensure it's believable. SO good. Only thing i noticed is there are a few typos. But i'm legit such a fan i can't put the book down. Specifically the 2nd book was fantastic. Such an incredible surprise at the end, which wound up surprising me in the middle of the 3rd too. The 3rd book doesn't really take off til about the middle, but it definitely keeps you interested the entire way with each of it's insanely dynamic characters. Literally I have recommended this series to everyone I come into contact who likes books, and literally everyone of my recommendations has came back super impressed. Congrats Rachel and Sherwood. You made quite possibly one of the best series I've come into contact in my 24 years of life. I'm looking forward for it to pick up, and I would die if it came to cinema!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2019There wasn't any really big event like there was in the first two books, but the there was a lot going on, a lot of reveals, a lot of progress and change, and now I'm really eager to read the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2019Absolutely loved this book and series, I can’t wait till the last book comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice mix of action and romance
Highly enjoyable character-driven YA fantasy, third in the series which started with 'Stranger'. The authors have a had a lot of fun inventing strange and often deadly post-apocalyptic flora and fauna, and with the walled town setting, with its small town politics and complex webs of relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone!
This is the best book in the Change series so far! The characters are likeable, complex and realistic. I loved watching how my favourite characters have becone more confident and mature. Becky's arc was the most emotionally moving, and I loved seeing Ross, Mia and Jenny again. I ended up pretty fond of Kerry too. Sheriff Crow was very likeable and badass as always.
The worldbuilding is amazingly detailed and well thought out. I loved the Wild West setting, the references to our time period, the scary trees, and the unique wildlife. The action is exciting and fast paced. I kept turning the pages, anxious to see if my favourite characters were safe.
The food descriptions are unique and delicious - they made me hungry just reading them!
This book also has great new characters and is unforgettable. It's possibly the best book I've read this year. I can't wait for when the next book comes out!
