Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, one of the greatest games of all-time, is now available to download for NVIDIA’s Shield TV. To celebrate the launch, fans of tactical espionage action can pick up the HD remaster of Konami’s PlayStation 2 masterpiece from the Play Store for just $9.99 for a limited time (down from $14.99).

NVIDIA’s Android TV-powered media player has enjoyed a growing number of ports of modern and classic games, but the stealthy arrival of Snake Eater is arguably the best addition to date. The title is regarded by many as the pinnacle of the Metal Gear series and legendary Japanese game director Hideo Kojima’s finest work.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Snake Eater is a fantastic starting point as it marks the beginning of the saga’s bewilderingly convoluted story. The game puts players in the camouflage boots of Naked Snake, a man who would later adopt the pseudonym Big Boss and become the series’ iconic anti-hero.

Rewind back to 1964 and Snake is tasked with rescuing a Russian rocket scientist and halting progress on a nuclear-ready superweapon, all while taking down an American war hero-turned-defector called The Boss who just so happens to be Snake’s close friend and mentor.

If you haven’t played Snake Eater I won’t spoil anything here for you, save to say that it contains some of the best boss encounters, cutscenes and set-pieces you’ll find in any Metal Gear title, or any game period.

While it presents fans with a different take on the traditionally urban-set, occasionally sci-fi-esque Metal Gear series, Snake Eater’s stripped-down survival mechanics, close quarters combat, and jungle setting gives the prequel a unique, guerilla-like feel that remains a treat to this day.

Much like the recently released Shield TV port for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the version coming to the Play Store is the HD Edition which first released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2011. As such, it retains all of the improved texture work, wider resolution, control tweaks and bonus features that were added to the vanilla experience.

You can pick up Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD exclusively for the NVIDIA Shield TV via the button below. Let us know if you’ll be taking on The Boss and her Cobra Unit for the first, second, or umpteenth time in the comments.
