Brittany Melton says she had to show her birth certificate in order to vote this afternoon in Alabaster, Ala.

After she voted, she tweeted about her experience, which was retweeted thousands of times.

She went to her polling place at Siluria Baptist Church in Alabaster at lunchtime and got in line.

"The lady there said I was marked inactive, so I'd need to go to another table," said Melton via email on Tuesday afternoon. "I went over and had to fill out a voter update card. Seemed routine."

She said she was surprised to find she'd been marked inactive because she voted in the Senate primary and her address hasn't changed in several years.

The voter update card asked for her birth county. She had her birth certificate with her so she was able to fill out that portion and get back in line.

"I travel out of country, mostly to Canada, so I generally keep alternate ID with me," said Melton, who is a web developer.

She said most of the people at her polling place were white, but said most of the people at the inactive voter table were people of color.

"While it's clear that this is voter suppression, the pollsters at my polling place weren't malicious," said Melton. "They were just doing their job."

After she voted, she tweeted about her experience, which was retweeted thousands of times.

"I didn't have this problem during the primaries or general election when it was clear Alabama was a Republican state. My information hasn't changed. There's no excuse for these shenanigans."
