Christmas sandwiches are as an important a part of the festive build-up as carol singing and office parties.

And in Cardiff we are spoilt by the city centre's independent sandwich shops which offer a mouthwatering array of turkey baguettes and sarnies.

So we decided to spend seven days working our way through seven of the offerings.

It was a tough task but we did it! And here's our verdict - in reverse order.

Be warned, reading this could make you feel hungry....

7. Market Deli, Cardiff Market

The sandwich: Turkey and stuffing roll.

Cost: £2.80

Verdict: A classic, no-nonsense Christmas roll without any frills. It comes with decent turkey and the stuffing is lush!

Rating: 3.5/5

6. Servini's, Wyndham Arcade

The sandwich: Turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets with cranberry sauce roll.

Cost: £5.45

Verdict: Everything in this baguette was very tasty, and with just the right amount of cranberry sauce. The pigs in blankets were a welcome addition. A bit pricey, but Servini's have delivered a satisfying seasonal roll, with taste coming out on top.

Rating: 4/5

5. Baguetty Junction, Penarth Road

The sandwich: Turkey, stuffing, sausage, cranberry sauce and gravy roll.

Cost: £4

Verdict: This roll delivers on all accounts. Taste and price. It's a real contender here, only let down by the thick gravy - which is a bit of a controversial sandwich filling anyway.

Rating: 4/5

4. Fresh, Royal Arcade

The sandwich: Roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce & chipolata sausage baguette.

Cost: £4.50

Verdict: We were eagerly awaiting this one as Fresh always seems to deliver on price and taste - and the daily queues outside the shop speak volumes. The added extra in this turkey baguette is the chipolata sausage which adds to the already wonderful taste.

Rating: 4.5/5

3. New York Deli, High Street Arcade

The sandwich: Turkey, NYD-stuffing, streaky bacon, cheddar cheese, baby gem lettuce, cranberry sauce and English mustard.

Cost: Hoagie: £8.90. Sandwich: £7.90. Bagel: £6.90

Verdict: Cardiff's New York Deli delivers an out of this world Christmas special. As usual this one is massive. We went for the sandwich option and were not disappointed. The only downside to this entry is the price.

Rating: 4.5/5

2. Bombers Sandwich House, Guildhall Place

The sandwich: Roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry and pigs in blankets - with or without gravy.

Cost: Hoagie - £4.25

Verdict: Bombers have gone traditional once again and we just love the with pigs in blankets. This is definitely going to prove a favourite during office lunch breaks in the run up to Christmas.

Rating: 4.5/5

1. Quay Street Kitchen, Quay Street

The sandwich : Turkey Christmas special - slow cooked pulled turkey with cranberry and port jelly and fresh rocket.

Veggie Christmas special - Stilton, apple & pear spicy chutney, walnuts and fresh rocket.

Cost: Meat - Baguette £5.95/ Sandwich £5.25. Veggie - Baguette £4.75/ Sandwich £3.95.

Verdict: Quay Street Kitchen has upped the stakes with TWO fantastic entries this year. First we have the meat option which with its pulled turkey and crispy bacon with cranberry sauce is a fantastic alternative to the more traditional turkey option.

However, it is the veggie choice that is the true winner here. The rich Stilton, is wonderful when paired with pear, walnuts and rocket. So much so that we found the veggie option to be better than the traditional meat.

The competition for the Christmas sandwich is certainly tough this year but Quay Street is a totally deserving winner. Don't miss out!

Rating: 5/5 for the veggie & 5/5 for the meat. So 5/5 overall.
