Apple this afternoon uploaded a new iPhone X video to its YouTube channel, this time showing off the new Portrait Lighting mode on the iPhone X.

In the 38-second video entitled "A New Light," Apple explains that Portrait Lighting offers studio quality lighting effects without the studio, while also showing off each of the different Portrait Lighting options.

Portrait Lighting is a feature available for both the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 Plus, but the iPhone X is the only device that offers Portrait Lighting effects for both the front and rear-facing cameras thanks to its front-facing TrueDepth lens system.

Apple's Portrait Lighting feature uses sophisticated algorithms to calculate how your facial features interact with light, to create unique lighting effects. There are several Portrait mode lighting presets, including Natural Light, Studio Light (lights up your face), Contour Light (adds dramatic shadows), Stage Light (spotlights your face against a dark background), and Stage Light Mono (Stage Light, but in black and white).

Portrait Lighting is one of the new features that Apple has focused on a few times before in past videos, sharing Portrait Lighting tutorials and demonstrations of Portrait Lighting in action. Most of Apple's prior videos focused on the iPhone 8 Plus, though, while this one is specific to iPhone X.

In between a rock and a hard place
I don't own an X, but every review I've seen says basically the same thing about portrait mode: needs a lot of work and software updates. Some reviews are more harsh than others but the overarching theme seems to be it needs some more time in the oven. Every example I've seen presented on MR has been less than stellar. Wonder why Apple is pushing it so hard when it doesn't seem to be fully fleshed out.

Partially because Apple wants to Associate it with the camera functionality, being that's one of the major marketing pieces for the iPhone as it is. It's similar to how Portrait mode was highlighted heavily with the iPhone 7 Plus in 2016. I think it has potential and some interesting effects behind Portrait lighting, it's just one of those features that's likely not one of the main highlights for using the camera in general, But an option none the less.

do you think that the portrait will be available for iphones with only 1 lens? (8,7) like pixel 2 has it

Nope. That would be one less reason for people to buy the more expensive iPhones.
Anyway it appears Apple has not figured out the machine learning Google used to get superior results using only one lens and one sensor.

I like portrait mode but it is not consistent. You have to have almost perfect conditions for the software to work. Very contrasting simple background work far from subject, but most others leave artifacts.

I jumped from my 3 year old iPhone 6 to X, and I definitely love the camera!
If Apple can improve further with software updates, then that's a win! :)

Please don't make stuff up...

It's not the BEST, but it's way better than in 2013. Siri does the things I ask of her, but there is room for improvement always, with anything.

You could switch to Android products but their entire OS is in beta and you'll probably get no updates to your Android phone unless it's the Pixel, which has a beta design.

Wow, Apple adds some simple Photoshop style effects to its camera software and this is news? No matter how advanced their algorithms, the end result is a change in shading. So a smart filter, of sorts. No amount of software can create a proper portrait. Only a photographer with the right equipment can do that. That is, if you value quality in the end product.

From what I’ve seen and experienced...it just doesn’t work. Actually it’s comically bad especially with hair. I can’t beleive they released it like this and are trying to pass it off as studio quality. IMO they should have waited.
