An Eye to the Playoffs

The Eagles win and move on. They celebrate for a half hour and then start thinking about the next opponent.
Howie Roseman and Joe Douglas have to keep one eye on the present and one on the future. You see them tweaking the practice squad on a regular basis, always looking for a player who might contribute in the future. You saw them give the contract extension to Tim Jernigan.
They have also made some moves to help the team in the short term. The Jay Ajayi trade was for this year and the future. On Monday the team signed veteran LB Dannell Ellerbe to add depth to the middle of the defense. On Tuesday the team made another move.

The Eagles lost Jason Peters and put Halapoulivaati Vaitai in at LT. That was a smart move. Vaitai showed potential last year when he filled in for Lane Johnson at RT. This summer he played on the left side because the team wanted him to be the swing tackle, the guy who could backup both spots. Vaitai has played pretty well at LT so far.
But what happens if he or Johnson gets hurt?
That’s why the Eagles signed Beatty. They played Isaac Seumalo against Denver and he was up and down. If one of the starters got hurt, I think the Eagles would prefer a veteran taking over. Seumalo spent the offseason mostly playing G and C. He is athletic enough to play OT, but it is still a challenge for him. Beatty has started 63 games in the NFL. He could step in if needed.
With the team off to an 8-1 start, the front office has to start thinking about the playoffs. If someone gets hurt, you can’t afford to put a project on the field. You need a player you trust can get the job done. Forget long term thinking. You try to win and advance.
The Eagles aren’t making any dumb moves. Vaitai will still be the LT. Beatty is here for depth. If Vaitai started to struggle, Beatty could get a chance to show what he could do. Ellerbe is here to compete with Joe Walker for the MLB job. I think Ellerbe should win that.
It is interesting that the front office is willing to make these moves. It pretty much acknowledges that they have an eye on the postseason.
As long as Pederson and the players stay focused on the next opponent, I think it is smart for the front office to keep an eye on the future. You are always a play away from needing a key replacement.

Good for Marshall. I thought he showed potential last year. I’m glad someone is giving him a chance to play.
As for Jones-Quartey, he started 12 games for the Bears last year after playing in 13 games as a rookie in 2015. Joe Douglas spent a year in Chicago with him and I’m sure that is part of the reason he was added.
Jones-Quartey can help in practice, but could also be added to the roster if one of the Safeties were to get hurt. He’s young, but does have experience as a starter and STer. He was on the Jets practice squad back in October.

For those of you who like analytics, here is a good piece on the sophomore QBs…Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott and Jared Goff.
As much as we want this to be a competition, all three of them can be good players. There isn’t a finite amount of praise in the football universe and we have to figure out who can get the most credit. Carson, Dak and Jared can all be good.
Honestly, I like them all being good. Football is more fun when you have good QBs.

Uncle Jimmy! It’s good to see Howie playing nicely with Joe. I thought they had a good offseason, but I was worried a little how it would play out. So far so great.

No but seriously if every QB in the NFC east was Bortles it would bring me so much pleasure.
I’d love to see a full slate of good QBs in the AFC for my non-Eagles viewing. Our whole conference can forfeit every game against us for the next 100 years as far as I’m concerned!
I get your point, but let’s face it there’s more fun involved when you can show you are the best of the best. During Reid’s early years, the Cowboys typically weren’t very good. When they started beating Romo and Dez, it became more intriguing and exciting.

I think he has something like 63 career starts, and 85 games played in total (going off of memory). He also won a SB ring w/the Giants.
In one way, I like the idea of bringing in veteran options w/big game experience. On the other side, these moves have a mercenary feel to them, and after the failed DT experiment (when Reid was near the end of his stay) and the Chip Kelly “let’s bring in Murray and Maxwell, they’ll be happy here” situation, I’m a bit jaded.
Hopefully they can gel with the rest of the locker room; Ellerbe makes some fill in, 2-down linebacker plays, and Beatty never sees the field.
Outside of Ajayi, these guys are not starters. They’re insurance policies!
Maybe next year Beatty can compete for a starting role if he’s still got it.
Ellerbe will be competing with Walker for the MLB spot in our base package; it’s a quasi-starter position, and one that if Ellerbe has anything left, he should win. Walker has potential, but he’s not someone that we’ll want on the field often. Good OC’s will find a way to take advantage of him on the field in the playoffs (see deep crossing routes by Broncos with Walker matched up on WR’s).
Beatty is insurance; I’d hate for him to see the field.
Mostly Schwartz runs a 4-2-5 base. One less LB. One extra DB.
Hicks and Bradham were like the two starters. Kendricks was in for about a third of the snaps. Now Kendricks and Bradham are the starters with Hicks out.
But who do you count on now for that 30% of the relief snaps besides those two? That’s where Ellerbee comes in right away.
And if Bradham or Kendricks has an injury, then Ellerbee has veteran presence to take on 60-70% of the snaps like a starter would. That would be a big load for Walker.
Beatty won’t be here next year. He is here as an insurance policy for this year only hence the 1 year contract.
Well that’s between him and the team. Beatty might want to stay and compete next year. The team might want him if the price is right. But that’s next year’s business.
It is possible but this just has a “1 year insurance policy for playoff push” feel all over it.
I don’t want to play Ms. Cleo with my man’s employment opportunities. There could be potential there for him if that’s what he wants. I’m sure he plans to play somewhere next year if he can. He’s the kind of veteran reserve that a winning team can use.
I’m just simply speculating with how it appears. After all this is a lot of what we do here since we are not employed by the organization.
Let’s hope that Seumalo and Vaitai, and possibly Gordon or Hart (believe me he’ll be back), improve to the point that Beatty won’t be necessary.
I’m of the same opinion many here have expressed. Development of the young O-Linemen is ideal; however, I do see the “insurance ” value of the Beatty signing. Taylor Hart wasn’t exactly “young” so replacing him on the 53-man roster with Beatty did not set any of the young players back. Who is active each week will be a bit more interesting now. For this week I expect Beatty will be inactive given his limited exposure to the Eagles playbook.
One comment that has been made is that Beatty’s playing “style” is not a good match to the Eagles Offensive scheme. Does anyone have any thoughts about that?
Don’t know about O line technique. It could mean hands and feet or it could mean spacing.
JP was always concerned with how a new Guard next to him maintained the spacing. Maybe we’ll hear more about that soon.
I don’t mind fill-in guys this time of year. And they’re all cheap! Really, not a whole lot of downside.
Chemistry is the one area where I get scared- but with their experience, they should be able to assimilate to the locker room culture quickly.
I think the difference is they are veterans and “work-horse” guys, not the new shiny mega-signing free agent.
Kelly wasn’t looking to strengthen his team for a playoff run, but felt his team had to be upgraded in order to become a contender. In other words, Kelly, with all his faults, realized his 10-6 teams weren’t as good as their record indicated.
His biggest issue was on defense and his idiotic decision to switch to a 3/4 alignment. His secondary was a joke and a 3/4 alignment demanded better OL play. That’s is why he signed Maxwell and traded McCoy for Alonso.
Kelly also saw no problem with inserting a square peg in a round hole. He got away with that tactic when he had Trent Cole and Brandon Graham playing OL, but failed miserably by attempting to insert DeMarco Murray into his offense.
Ehhh, I think Kelly giving away upper echelon NFL talent for nothing (releasing Jackson) and making bad trades (McCoy for Kiko Alonso, Foles + a first round pick for Sammy Sleeves) were bigger problems than the shift to a 3-4 defense.
Releasing Jackson was idiotic. You aren’t going to get an argument from me on that deal. However, the other moves made sense.
As far as McCoy goes, yes with perfect 20/20 hindsight it was obvious that trade shouldn’t have been made, but if Alonso was anywhere near the player he was with the Bills or is today with the Dolphins, the trade made sense. This is especially true when you realize how difficult it is to find OLB’s to play in a 3/4 scheme.
As much as I like Foles, Bradford is the better QB, when healthy. Of course healthy obviously is a big problem. However, make no mistake that the Eagles would not have gotten the Vikings number one pick with Foles because it was Pat Shumer that convinced Vikings management to make the trade because of Shumer’ s history with Bradford.
Another thing to note was where Bradford was the good soldier when the Eagles traded up to number 2 where they drafted Wentz, Foles left and never returned when the Rams traded up to number 1 and took Goff. When Bradford was in camp helping Wentz, Foles was no where to be found.
Alonso plays ILB not OLB.
My mistake,but the Eagles needed help at all LB positions, especially considering Hicks wasn’t even there yet.
I don’t think an ILB in a 3-4 – even a good one – has the same value as an elite RB, which McCoy was and continued to be for several years after that trade was made. Alonso coming off a serious injury just made it that much more of a risk.
As for the Bradford trade – I didn’t like it because it seemed like giving up premium resources (high draft pick) to make a lateral move at quarterback. For all the talk about arm talent and pedigree and what not, Bradford has never struck me as anything more than the very definition of mediocrity at the QB position. I was okay with Kelly deciding Foles wasn’t his guy, but why give up so much for such a middling performer, especially when there were cheaper experimental options (e.g. Tyrod Taylor, who I suspect would’ve thrived in Kelly’s offense) available?
Hence I stand by my opinion that these were both bad trades.
It was Foles + a second round pick. We got better value when trading away Bradford, so not sure you can argue that was an overpay or a bad trade. Unless you really believed Foles was the QB of the future after 2014.
Granted, Bradford’s immobility basically caused Kelly to dumb down his offense to the point it was painfully predictable, so maybe that wasn’t the best trade for him.
Not to defend the hated, but Kelly wanted to shed position $$ when he shopped McCoy, and Alonso was ROY. It didn’t work out for us, but Alonso was coming off an injury too soon probably, and suffered a partial tear of the same ligament that he’d had repaired. He has since shown his previous form.
Kiko, Trent, and Brandon played on the OL? No wonder we were bad.
Actually, I thought Trent and Brandon did well under the circumstances, but OLB was no where near their strength.
This isn’t a “Dream Team” acquisition at the beginning of the season, but a move to add depth at a position which has become shallow due to injury. Since you can’t draft players or trade for players at midseason, the only moves are to sign FAs or off od practice squads. And signing the kind of raw, inexperienced player you get off a PS to fill depth when you’re looking to make a playoff run seems like the worse option to me.

I said it earlier, if we need to see Beatty playing regular snaps, we’ve already got a problem. I’d rather have him as a backup than Hart, though I’m excited to see if Hart can continue to develop into a backup OT next year. Hopefully they bring him back.

Part of what i love about our current team is they are stacked with talented players that I WANT to root for. It’s an underrated aspect that I really appreciate about this team, coaching staff and ownership. We have true leadership
Paxton Lynch was the second douchiest looking player in the draft, so it’s no wonder Jerry Jones wanted him too.
Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler are some kind of singularity when it comes to douchey looking quarterbacks. Osweiler has the most rich boy bratty ass face I’ve seen in the NFL and Lynch looks like a solid candidate for a new scumbag Steve meme.

They have tanked for the season and are in the race for the pick in the #1 in the draft. Their fans don’t want to see another win. The ownership knows it.
But particularly if they are tanking (I’m not sure that’s a thing in the NFL), why are they not churning the bottom third of the roster looking to the future? Perhaps because they want to start with the coach?

Jerry Reese gets a whole lot of credit, and granted he hit big time on some draft picks and generally signed some successful FAs, but holy crap he also has a gigantic part of completely depleting the Giants roster of talent in crucial areas and failing to get young on other areas he inherited. All that while he had stability on the QB position and a veteran coach for the majority of his tenure. Arguable, that HC lost his team in the end, but the hire Reese made looks like a huuuuuuuuge mistake, maybe the mistake that ruins everything else.
Reese fell right into the classic trap of bad teams, letting his OL deteriorate to a deeply problematic level, that demands several investments through draft or FA, AND obviously hitting on them.
Completely lacking talent at the RB position. Say what you will about Smallwood and Clement maybe just being JAGs, Blount being short term and AJ being injured, but Perkins, Darkwa and Vereen. Yikes.
Obviously, that target core of OBJ, Shepard and Engram looks dangerous, but holy crap OBJ is gonna demand a lot of money and now you’re gonna go into a situation really quick where you have to find a new QB.
And that defense might look good on paper, maybe they’ll even look good on the field with a new coach who they haven’t quit on, but holy crap theres some heavy investment on that unit and they’re not playing well.
Theres gonna be a big job to do for a GM in NY, and they’re not even competing for the final years of Eli Manning. I think Reese survives, but their rapist-vibe-givin HC has to be gone right?
One of the best things AR did while he was here was continuously invest resources in the OL, even when there was no pressing need there. Every year we’d take at least one offensive lineman in the first four rounds, and while we didn’t hit on all of them, it paid off in the fact that we always had depth and had guys with some talent ready to step in when we lost players to free agency, injury, or retirement.
Conversely one of the worst things Chip Kelly did was not invest sufficiently in the offensive line, going two straight drafts without selecting a single lineman after taking Johnson at #4 overall in 2013. Reese apparently follows the Kelly philosophy.

I agree, I think the fastest way for a good team to get bad is to let the OL deteriorate. Unless you have a freakish quarterback with great mobility like Rodgers or Cam or Wilson you can’t survive a bad OL.
The moves since Ajayi are all guys that were on the street. 32 teams could have had them, even Chaz Green replacement teams. The improvement over the guys that were on the practice team each week and practiced in OTA and played preseason is very, very minimal.
If any of them see the field, eagles are probably not making playoffs.

Walker doesn’t look great, that’s why I don’t mind the Ellerbe signing. As a 2 down LB, he should be able to offer help with the run and pass. Walker looked like he was guessing out there.
Hart was the wildcard, but if the team feels like Beatty will be a better emergency option than Hart, then I’m okay with it.
Yeah, Hart’s still a “developmental” player. They clearly are looking for plug-and-play depth not a guy with upside.
Makes sense when the stakes are high- this is a veteran staff. They know opportunities don’t arrive like this every year. Strike while the iron is hot.

If you’d told me in August that Vaitai would be at LT and Mills, Robinson, and Douglas would be starting at CB at this point, I’d have thought we weren’t making the playoffs.
I disagree with your sentiments. They seem to represent surface level thoughts – no offense.
They were mostly cut for injuries, which can heal over time – and time has passed. But your explanation leaves no room for that.
Elerbe could work out in spot duty.
And it’s not just for making the playoffs – it’s for performance in the playoffs.

Agree with you, and I’ll add that the only way Beatty sees the field is if the Eagles are fighting for playoff position or in a tight spot come January.
Otherwise, I’m sure they’d be thrilled to have Seumalo getting reps protecting FOles.
They are also older veterans. What pointbwould it be for a team like the Giants or Browns to bring in Beatty now. They are both looking at tearing apart the coachin staffs. A 32 yo OT has no benefit to them. Develop the players you have.
We are in a different situation. We are looking for depth to make a super bowl run. They are a 1/2 year stop gap at best. Beatty likely only sees the field off an injury occurs.
My point is that while 32 teams had a chance to sign these guys, it really only made sense for a few team based on need and playoff situation.

An aye to the playoffs
Saw a website with QB rankings, and I thought it was interesting they had Dak ahead of Jared Goff. IMO this year Goff is clearly having the better season. Dak’s reputation needs to be further tarnished I think.
That’s dumb. Dak Pennington is the ultimate game manager.
I’m pleased to report his QBR dropped 2 points after the Falcons game. If the dumb dirty birds had held onto an interception or two it would be even worse.

Yeah I generally don’t mind letting them play a little, but they got away with murder way too long. On the flip side I think certain receivers get away with push offs all the time. That drives me crazy too.
I’m curious who you think gets away with push offs?
Dez and Odell come to mind for me. Also everyone on the LAC seems to do it too
Agree with who you mentioned. Also, Gronk gets away with a lot, and he doesn’t need to. There is an art to creating separation and you are supposed to do it without fully extending you arms with a flat out push. But some of these guys just go right into the defender at the top of their routes and shove the guy off, turn around, and complete it for a first down.
I think people are overrating the threat the Seahawks pose and underrating the threat the Rams pose.
