Biden’s Crisis Remarks Reverberate

The campaign of Senator John McCain is trying to capitalize on some potentially ambiguous words from Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, at a Seattle fund-raiser Sunday night.

Mr. Biden predicted that Senator Barack Obama, if he is elected president, will quickly face a challenge from some hostile power or terrorist group eager to test the resolve of the rookie chief executive.

“Mark my words,” Mr. Biden warned at the Seattle fund-raiser, according to reports from network producers traveling with him, “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember, I said it standing here, if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re going to have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.”

He added, “He’s going to have to make some really tough – I don’t know what the decision’s going to be, but I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it’s going to happen.” He said he could envision four or five scenarios that might arise to challenge the new president, citing Russia or the Middle East as possible sources of trouble.

He then called on the donors to be prepared to rise to Mr. Obama’s defense because he will need to make some difficult and unpopular choices in response. “I’ve forgotten more about foreign policy than most of my colleagues know, so I’m not being falsely humble with you,” Mr. Biden told the donors, by way of reassuring them of his and Mr. Obama’s toughness and preparation. “I think I can be value added, but this guy has it. This guy has it.”

Mr. Biden was not clear about the “testing” Mr. Kennedy underwent upon taking office. His biggest early debacle – the Bay of Pigs invasion in April 1961 – was conceived by the CIA under the Eisenhower administration, not by some foreign power. His biggest test, the Cuban missile crisis, came in October 1962.

In July of this year, Senator Joseph Lieberman, a staunch ally of Mr. McCain’s also warned of potential crises that would confront the next president although he stopped short of saying an Obama presidency would be more likely to attract a terrorist threat. On ABC’s “This Week,” Mr. Lieberman cited additional history:

George Stephanopoulos: Are you saying that the election is going to trigger an attack and an attack is more likely if Obama gets elected?

Mr. Leiberman: No. But let me make clear, history tells us this — in 1993, the first years of the Clinton administration, al Qaeda hit the World Trade Center with a truck bomb; in 2001, 9/11, the first year of the Bush administration, al Qaeda hit the World Trade Center.

Our government is worried about the Iranians or the terrorists testing a new president. What I’m saying is we need a president on January 20th, 2009, who’s ready to be commander-in-chief on day one. I think by his life experience, by his long service in the Senate, by his passing tests under pressure, by his introduction of the 9/11 Commission and support of the 9/11 legislation, by his support of the Patriot Act and the Wiretapping Act, John McCain is ready to protect the security of the American people. I’m not saying Barack Obama is not prepared. I’m saying John McCain is ready on day one, and that’s what we’re going to need.

The McCain campaign has been e-mailing the Biden remarks around, citing them as evidence that electing Mr. Obama would be risky. Mr. McCain, in remarks prepared for delivery at a campaign rally in Missouri this afternoon, was preparing to say that the United States cannot afford to elect an untested chief executive who might be a temptation to terrorists or others who wish the nation ill.

“The next president won’t have time to get used to the office,” Mr. McCain is planning to say, according to excerpts released by the campaign. “We face many challenges here at home, and many enemies abroad in this dangerous world. Just last night, Senator Biden guaranteed that if Senator Obama is elected, we will have an international crisis to test America’s new president. We don’t want a president who invites testing from the world at a time when our economy is in crisis and Americans are already fighting in two wars.

“What is more troubling is that Senator Biden told their campaign donors that when that crisis hits, they would have to stand with them because it wouldn’t be apparent Senator Obama would have the right response. Forget apparent. Senator Obama won’t have the right response, and we know that because we’ve seen the wrong response from him over and over during this campaign. He opposed the surge strategy that is bringing us victory in Iraq and will bring us victory in Afghanistan. He said he would sit down unconditionally with the world’s worst dictators. When Russia invaded Georgia, Sen. Obama said the invaded country should show restraint.”

He is planning to add, “We cannot spend the next four years as we have spent much of the last eight: hoping for our luck to change at home and abroad. We have to act. We need a new direction, and we have to fight for it.”

David Wade, spokesman for Mr. Biden, released a statement to explain what Mr. Biden intended.

“With our nation facing two wars and 21st century threats abroad, Senator Biden referenced the simple fact that history shows presidents face challenges from day one. After eight years of a failed foreign policy, we need Barack Obama’s good judgment and steady leadership, not the erratic and ideological Bush-McCain approach that has set back our security and standing in the world.”

Comments are no longer being accepted.

So far, McCain has failed every crises he has faced during the campaign.

Fortunately, Obama has aced every crisis. People trust Obama.

Wow, I almost feel bad for the Republicans that some rumination by Biden is the best they’ve got. These minor little things that keep popping up aren’t enough to move the election results.

I gather the Republicans never do contingency planning or “what if” scenarios from this latest nitpicking. It shows in the slowness of their response to emergencies too.

no… it’s NOT the economy stupid.

no… the world is NOT a violent and contrary place full of folks that we have terrorized, patronized, colonized or conquered because of the material wealth that they own as nations, or the god(s) that they pray to.

no… nobody would DARE challenge america with a cranky old man at the helm.

yep… iran, north korea, russia, sudan, pakistan’s i.s.i., osama, the taliban, chavez and mugabe are just going to roll up their rugs and HIDE OUT if McCain is elected.

somebody, please… please… please pinch me.

The only thing we have to FEAR is McCain/Palin (fear itself!) in the White House!

Excitable, pugnacious John McCain can’t wait to push a button or give a command……that’s why he’s the LAST guy we need, especially at this time in our history! ! !

Will anyone get caught reading “My Pet Goat”?

Huh?

Joe Biden was pointing out that the new president will face a test. He didn’t exclude McCain from that equation but he’s hardly focused on McCain being the next president either.

As for the McCain campaign trying to twist this by saying, “The next president won’t have time to get used to the office,” what in the world are they talking about? Has John McCain been president before and we just forgot about it? Has he even been making smart foriegn policy decisions as a senator?

This just seems like more of the same. The McCain people making this obnoxious assumption that he is somehow infinitely qualified to lead in a crisis because of his pedigree and his suffering at the hands of the North Vietnamese.

His own record doesn’t back that up. And, just in case anyone got confused, he hasn’t been president before. He’s been supporting George W Bush who has been president for nearly eight years and still is terrible at handling crisis.

Can anyone name a president who WASN’T “tested” while in office? And if they want to play this game, I’m looking forward to the day when Republicans finally take ownership of Bush flunking his 9/11 test.

Joe Biden, that was a stupid thing to say! Right now, McCain’s campaign is looking for anything to distort and twist. One sentence in a conversation on taxes has been used to slime him as a socialist. Saying what you said was totally unnecessary.

Yeah, “Ace McCain” is really tested. Downed 5 aircraft! Of course they were all his; one because, in his own admission, he was “clowning around.” As one of his fellow pilots put it, “The Navy’s accident rate was cut in half, when he (McCain) was taken prisoner.” And his erratic behavior over the last 7 weeks, beginning with his choice of Sarah Palin, has been stellar. He panicked when the stock market crashed. And when Russia invaded Georgia, it was obvious he would have declared war on Russia if he had been President. The man is dangerous.

While I think Senator Biden was accurate in his assessment – if a bit pessimistic – I wish he hadn’t said anything at all. He must not have realized that journalists were writing his words down.

While the words don’t really hurt Senator Obama, they certainly don’t help. And of course, Senator McCain’s campaign was more than happy to twist Senator Biden’s words into an Anti-Obama message.

Personally, I fear what will happen if somehow Senator McCain wins this campaign. While I have no doubt that he is capable of leading a country, I also have no doubt that he will continue to lead us into economic turmoil, further widening the wealth gap between the rich and the so-called “middle” class. He will likely appoint anywhere from 2-4 justices on the Supreme Court – replacing justices that had liberal tendencies with those who are conservative, practically guaranteeing a reversal of so many civil rights we have fought so long and hard for.

Maverick or not, Senator McCain is a Republican with Republican ties and Republican methods. Trickle down economics, tax cuts with a huge deficit, and a continuing degradation of education and civil rights.

And moreover, we saw how Senator McCain handled the so-called financial crisis just a few weeks ago. Do we really want a president who will be that unpredictable and divisive if a truly dire event occurs?

Ouch! Keep Joe Biden under wraps and ride out the remainiong weeks.

I guess it was inevitable that Joe’s mouth would cause trouble at some point. Really a stupid comment to make.
Say it ain’t so, Joe!

Oh, geez. Now Joe Biden is endorsing McCain.

now how could that be when obama is a friend of the terrorists? it can’t be both ways can it? your are a friend of terrorists and also an enemy of terrorists? wouldn’t obama’s friendships with terrorists keep him safe? i just don’t get it.

Either candidate would be a “new” president. A new president will be tested, regardless of the election’s outcome. I’m concerned that McCain (or Palin) would – in true “maverick” fashion – react in a wreckless and irresponsible manner.

In a time of crisis, would you rather have a smart and competent person like Obama leading the country or a confused old man leading the country, with a clueless Palin in the wings.

Joe Biden has long been a windbag and soon he will be in a position that will allow him to be a dangerous windbag. Obama is an empty suit with little experience and Biden is showing that he, too, cannot be trusted to act prudently in a crisis, since he can’t even do that during a campaign.

McCain might have flaws, and lots of them, but he is head and shoulders over Obama.

Obama’s aced every crisis? He’s sat out the financial crisis, waiting for the whole thing to blow over so he can be President. He’s not a senator, he just plays one in real life. McCain isn’t faultless, but he has shown up for his job and has tried to solve problems in a bipartisan way, as in McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy and McCain-Lieberman.

one of the few differences between mccain and biden is that biden’s straight talk usually lands his foot in his mouth.

“Will anyone get caught reading “My Pet Goat”?

— John”

IQ is inversely correlated with a person’s eagerness to reference “My Pet Goat” in comments.

Somehow the Republicans arguments have been somewhat diluted by McCain’s recent response to the financial meltdown. When that is added to the incompetence of Ms. Palin should she find herself taking the place of Mr. McCain as president, I will take the calm, assured reaction of Mr. Obama if this time of testing does, indeed, come.

Reverberate? With Who?
This is the first I’ve heard of this – what a waste. A comet could come crashing down from outerspace during the first year of a McCain or Obama administration. One would look for ways to minimize suffering, the other would say it’s the end of days. How is that for Reverberation?

Please, please, please neoconservation Republicans stop with the scare tactics. ANY president will face obstacles andchallenges and the unknown.

We, I, have faith in the power of Obama and those that stand with him in his cabinet and as his advisors. Particularly, the respected and highly regarded, Mr. Colin Powell.

Obama’s steady judgment and good leadership as well as having the respect of the world will see us through.
McCain, who has never been a president would have to go through the same acclimation process.

Geez! It will be like this every day until November 5th. This is comparable the Y2K thing and waiting for the computers to destroy themselves and the world!
