Introduction: The Reading Man

For a makerspace workshop challenge, we were asked to make something useful out of PVC. This is my first attempt at working with and creating with PVC, and I wanted to make something for the elementary library I teach in. I used cutting tools, a drill, a soldering kit, and other resources I'd never had the chance to work with before to create this unique lamp piece. We put it up in the library today, and the kids love it! Thanks for looking!

Step 1: Step 1: Gather Your PVC Material

We started with a long piece of 3/4 inch PVC pipe, we counted out the number of 90 degree pieces (10), 45 degree (1), 3 way (1), and 4 way (1) pieces we'd need, and set about cutting our pipe into the pictured segments.

Step 2: Step 2: Piece Him Together

We fit the pieces together without gluing at this point, to be sure our measurements and sizing we how we wanted.

Step 3: Step 3: Drill Hole for Lighting Fixture

After we were sure of the placement of our pieces, we took out the 3 way piece and drilled a hole in the backside. We made sure the bit was large enough for the wiring to be pulled through when it came time to light him up!

Step 4: Step 4: Paint!

We put our guy back together and spray painted him a navy blue to match our school colors - he'll be living in the library - but you can make yours any color your please!

Step 5: Step 5: Wiring

After the paint was dry, we took a standard lighting set and cut the end off the cord. I wish I had taken pictures here, but I forgot!

We took the end without the plug in piece and ran it through the "body" of the man and out the hold in the 3 way piece. We pulled it out the back, then used a soldering kit to reconnect the wires. (Please have help with this or look up instructions on how to correctly separate and reconnect the wires!)

When finished, light him up!

We did not glue him because we wanted to be able to adjust his arms according to the size of book he is holding, but you could to ensure he doesn't move!
