Low-profile locking connector for LED lighting

AVX has added a locking plug to its 70-9159 series of low-profile 5A board to board connectors.

Part of its ‘Stript’ insulator-less single contact range, the gold-plated beryllium-copper (BeCu) spring contacts have a positive latching mechanism and can absorb a 1mm of tolerance in the x and y direction.

Led lighting is one intended application – the locking plug features the same 1.2mm height as the rest of the series, which prevents shadowing effects in led lighting, and connector can be placed and spaced to support any pin count.

TO get an idea of size, the blades in the photo oar 2mm wide.

“Adding a small latch to our original plug contact has allowed us to offer our customers the proven performance of the series with an added-value benefit at no additional cost, and while maintaining full backward compatibility with existing designs,” said AVX connector product manager Tom Anderson. “Individual 70-9159 Series contacts can also support both board-to-board and wire-to-board applications.”

70-9159 contacts are rated for 300V (based on placement distance), 5A current, five-cycle durability, and operation across -40 to +125°C.

Except for the new locking plug, which is in the midst of the UL approval process, the series is UL E90723-approved based on a 3.2mm minimum gap between pads or 5.6mm contact centre spacing. In it also RoHS-compliant and packaged on tape and reel for automated SMT placement.
