The Johnsons have Jefferson on their side.

Tony winner Daveed Diggs, who just wrapped his run in the Broadway smash Hamilton in dual roles Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette, will appear in multiple episodes on ABC’s Black-ish next season, EW has confirmed. Diggs will play Johan, the brother of Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) who butts heads with Rainbow’s husband Dre (Anthony Anderson).

Kenya Barris, the show’s creator and executive producer, told Variety, who first reported the news, that Diggs’ Johan is “sort of a hipster, entitled kid” who has taken Rainbow’s parents’ new-age teachings to heart – much to the annoyance of Dre.

“He’s probably gone to Penn or Wharton and could have gotten a great-paying job, but he’s trying to find himself,” Barris explained to the trade. “That attitude more than anything makes Dre want to strangle him.”

Barris says Diggs will first crop up in an early episode of the show’s third season, premiering Sept. 21 on ABC.
