Qualcomm sees 5G promise

Qualcomm had Q2 revenue of $6 billion for a net profit of $1.4 billion. Compared to Q2 2015, the revenue was up 2% and profit up 22%. It expects $6.2 billion revenue in Q3.

Progress has been made in licensing in China but negotiations with hold-outs are continuing while a lawsuit against hand-set maker Meizu may encourage the hold-outs to settle.

5G is on track. CEO Steve Mollenkopf said: ““Recent spectrum regulatory decisions and movement in the U.S. and Europe, combined with progress on the spectrum regulatory front in China, Japan and Korea, are good indications that the world is preparing for 5G.”

For the nine months ending in June 2016, Qualcomm’s revenues were 12% down on the same period last year at $17.37 billion compared to $19.83 billion the year before
