      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The BFG minimizes the darker elements of Roald Dahl's classic in favor of a resolutely good-natured, visually stunning, and largely successful family-friendly adventure.

Ethan G I love this movie because it explores the darker themes of Roald Dahl's fantastic novel while still keeping it a child-friendly experience. The cast is great, the direction is top-notch and the visuals (if not entirely convincing at times) are beautiful. 4.5/5 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review BuzzyBeetle216 They got a biology fact wrong. Snozzcumbers have seeds, and therefore they are fruits, not vegetables. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Alec B Despite the legitimately impressive effects work and the perfect casting of Rylance, there's a hollowness to the film that can't be ignored. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/23 Full Review Random M Its been a while since i have seen this movie but when I did watch it, it was a good movie and good book. But a weird story line Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/27/23 Full Review Erin D This was one of my favorite books that I read with my children, who are now in their thirties. I didn't watch the movie when it first came out because it was so badly reviewed. I just watched it tonight and I LOVED it. Danny Leigh Financial Times Visually, though, the film can be gorgeous. Rated: 3/5 Dec 30, 2016 Full Review Michael Koresky Film Comment Magazine When put into self-consciously cinematic form, The BFG becomes too big, too friendly, and too giant, in its rollicking gambols, patronizing slapstick, and certainly in its swelling sentimentality. Sep 6, 2016 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The BFG is a delightful fantasy, one all associated with the film should be proud of, the end result an enchanting journey of resilience and imagination the likes of which dreams are born from. Rated: 3/4 Aug 9, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Come and meet Steven Spielberg’s dullest lemon and worst dumpster fire. The BFG is a victim of two uneven halves populating a single film. Rated: 1/5 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “The BFG” is a delightfully heartwarming movie that may push away those looking to have their senses set ablaze by nonstop action and rampant silliness. But for those looking for an intelligent and engaging experience, “The BFG” more than delivers. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review For any other filmmaker, this film would be a splendid Dahl adaptation. For Spielberg, it's far less than a dream come true.
