The 1980 mansion that Cher built in the style of an Egyptian palace is back on the market for $US85 million.

The six-hectare property features 11 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms on a large estate in Benedict Canyon Drive in Beverly Hills.

Cher told People magazine that her architect Ted Grenzbach “got a lot of ideas from the souvenir book that came with the TV movie Jesus of Nazareth.”

The singer built the main house in the late 1970s on what was then a 1.6 hectare block, with construction complete by 1980.

In 1988, she sold the property to Eddie Murphy for $US5.9 million.

In the 1990s he sold the then-six bedroom property and it changed hands again before the current owners, the Walters family, bought it.

Raul and Vicki Walters purchased the property for $US6.395 million and have spent years buying adjoining land parcels to extend the grounds to cover 6.4 hectares.

The 1858sqm house is situated among well-manicured lawns with a tennis court and outdoor entertaining spaces.

The main house has two fireplaces, a dining room, two kitchens, a spa and jacuzzi, a dry sauna and a safe room.

The sprawling estate has a set of stables to house five horses plus two upstairs bedrooms. There are also two horse rings yet the large property is just a short drive from Rodeo Drive.

The Walters have added the equestrian facilities, staff quarters, guest houses, a tennis court, 464sqm of travertine floors, outdoor entertaining areas and koi ponds.

The property also includes an impressive 650sqm guest house with three bedrooms, arched doorways, Moroccan tiles, coffered ceilings and hand-carved wood doors.

The extensive grounds include riding and hiking trails.

The main home has been partially renovated by the Walters, with work halted in 2009 following the death of Raul. His widow Vicki is now selling the large property.

“A new owner would need to build out the kitchens, bathrooms and finishes,” agent Aaron Kirman tells the Wall Street Journal.

The property is being sold through the John Aaroe Group.
