Before both appearing at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Lady Gaga and the Dalai Lama shared a private conversation Sunday.

Gaga aired the Q&A on Facebook Live and fielded questions on humanity from "young people, old people from all over the world" for nearly 20 minutes.

The first question concerned how the Lama helps "young people address issues of poor self-esteem, managing eating disorders, addiction, self-harm, and suicide?" He pointed to the possibility of a very materialistic world potentially diverting from people being educated about inner value and having a "lack of compassionate feeling taught."

"[A] beautiful brain and warm-heartedness must combine," he added. "Then, that person can be really happy."

"So what you're saying is, caring for others and having compassion, it gives you a sense of purpose, so it helps you to feel less alone and alienated so you know we all belong together," Gaga followed in a statement the Lama affirmed.

The two touched on myriad topics, from self-esteem to the importance of meditation. The final topic from Gaga took a wider prospective of the world. "'How can I still feel at peace with so much horror in this wonderful world? I need peace of mind. I'm losing it.'"

His Holiness provided an answer learned from his own life: "So when some problem you see happens, if you look closely, then it appears unbearable. The same problem, looked from distance — a more wider prospective — yes there's a problem, I have to face it. But there are other positive things, so I should not lose hope."

They were both part of a panel that also included businessman Philip Anschutz of The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation during the Conference that was also streamed on Facebook Live.
