Woody Allen: Kate Winslet set to star in filmmaker's next movie

Woody Allen turned 80 in December, but the New York filmmaker shows no signs of slowing down. As usual, he heads into the fall with the announcement of an upcoming film shoot — and this one just added some titanic star wattage.

EW has confirmed that Oscar-winner Kate Winslet is in final negotiations to appear in Allen’s next movie, his 47th as a director. Plot, character details, and the title are (characteristically for a Woody Allen project) unknown at this time.

Allen has directed more actresses to Oscar glory than any working director, a total of six, beginning with Diane Keaton’s win for 1977’s Annie Hall and most recently with Cate Blanchett in 2013’s Blue Jasmine. Only Golden Age filmmaker William Wyler directed more, with seven. Those are facts that Allen surely cares very little about — though Winslet might. Her first Oscar nod, 21 years ago for Sense and Sensibility, resulted in a loss to Mira Sorvino, from Allen’s movie Mighty Aphrodite.

Winslet, 40, was most recently seen in Triple 9, the Divergent sequel Insurgent, and her Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning supporting role in Steve Jobs. She’ll be onscreen next in the Australian drama The Dressmaker, due in U.S. theaters this September.

Allen’s forthcoming film, Cafe Society, which was met with polite if not glowing reviews after premiering at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, opens on July 15. His untitled half-hour series starring Miley Cyrus is expected to debut later this year on Amazon.
