Why this petition matters

Started by International Eating Disorders Action
The Aspire Bariatrics 'assisted bulimia' device is a dangerous tool that mimics the serious and life threatening eating disorder bulimia and will not be effective for its proposed long term weight loss of heavy patients. The potential to be misused by people predisposed to or suffering from eating disorders is extremely high. Clinical evidence that diets don't work and there is no evidence that a device pumping partially digested food out of a stomach will work either. This aspiration device legitimizes purging, encourages binging, undermines bodily autonomy, intuition around eating and fullness, and steps up fatphobia under the falsehood of 'obesity reduction.' This is a medicalized, surgicalized imposition of bulimia on higher-weight bodies, telling folks that having an eating disorder is better than being fat. This device is shameful, and I encourage folks to PLEase please sign this petition and help get it taken off the market!! Eating disorders affect over 35 M Americans and are on the rise. They have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses. While eating disorders have genetic underpinning (up to 80%) environment also plays a role. Eating disorders affect people of all weights, sizes, genders, ethnicities, nationalities, socioeconomic backgrounds. This device has no significant proven benefit to achieve long term weight loss and a high potential to cause serious damage in both the heavy population that may use it for aupposed clinical weight loss and those with EDs (of all weights) desiring to lose weight. We ask that the FDA recall its approval of this dangerous device immediately. Thank you
