Ghostbusters: Melissa McCarthy responds to Internet haters

Melissa McCarthy and her Ghostbusters castmates have heard all the horrible things, including the misogynist comments, fans have made about the film. To the harshest of her dissenters, she has a few words of her own.

During an interview with The Guardian, McCarthy addressed the backlash over the female-led Ghostbusters revamp. “All those comments – ‘You’re ruining my childhood!’ I mean, really,” she said. “Four women doing any movie on earth will destroy your childhood? I have a visual of those people not having a Ben [Falcone, her husband], not having friends, so they’re just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the Internet. I just hope they find a friend.”

In the past, McCarthy addressed specific qualms over the trailer, which referenced the events of the original. “It’s a reboot. I know, it’s weird that they said the ‘30 years ago’ because in this movie, the first one didn’t happen,” McCarthy said during a recent interview with iHeart Radio. “It’s that great story, but told totally differently.”

Eventually it became the most disliked trailer in YouTube history. “Believe me, the question was asked. I was like, ‘I think that’s very confusing,’ but then everyone said, ‘We don’t care what you think,’” she recalled.

Kristen Wiig and director Paul Feig also addressed some of the insults slung at the film. The former remarked that the controversy “bummed” her out, while Feig told EW, “I just don’t understand why it’s ever an issue anymore. I’ve promoted both Bridesmaids and The Heat and myself and my cast are still hit constantly with the question, ‘Will this answer the question of whether women can be funny?’ I really cannot believe we’re still having this conversation.”

Ghostbusters stars McCarthy, Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as four new phantom fighters armed with proton packs and their sexy secretary played by Chris Hemsworth. The film will hit theaters on July 15.
