Schmidt will happen next season.

Fox announced Tuesday that it had renewed New Girl for a sixth season. The ensemble comedy — which stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, and Lamorne Morris — has been averaging 3.8 million viewers per episode in season 5, with a 1.9 rating in the 18-to-49-year-old demo.

“Every network comedy should aspire to what [New Girl creator] Liz Meriwether is achieving in New Girl, with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling,” said Fox Entertainment president David Madden in a statement. “The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was, we want to congratulate New Girl on reaching its milestone 100th episode, and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”

A few weeks ago, Fox renewed returning comedies Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Last Man on Earth. Freshman comedies The Grinder, Grandfathered, Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life, and Bordertown are still awaiting their official fates, with the latter two’s chances looking the bleakest.
