8 dead, 12 hurt in Typhoon Nona’s wake —NDRRMC

Typhoon Nona may have dissipated into a low-pressure area but it left eight people dead and 12 others wounded, a disaster management official said Thursday.

At a press conference, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson  Mina Marasigan also said all the eight fatalities were due to secondary effects of Typhoon Nona, except for two who drowned.

The NDRRMC identified the fatalities as:

Samuel White from Romblon
Violeta Habla - Sorsogon
Edina Habla - Sorsogon
Allan Padilla - Albay
Rizal Villanueva - Masbate
Aucente Pascual Jr - Northern Samar
Jason Blesario - Samar
Tessie Villanueva - Northern Samar

The NDRRMC corrected an earlier report pegging the death toll at nine.

On the other hand, Marasigan said that 15,336 families or 68,100 people in six cities are still being given assistance; while 12,229 families or 53,850 individuals are still in evacuation centers.

Moreover, the NDRRMC said Nona destroyed 109,065 houses— 13,330 totally and 95,735 partially.

Damage to agriculture and infrastructure in Regions IV-A, IV-B, V, and VIII was estimated at P320,025,710.96.

Nona weakened into a tropical depression early on Thursday before it dissipated into a low-pressure area.

Meanwhile, state weather agency PAGASA spokesperson Elsie Cayanan said a convergence of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) and Easterlies would cause continuous rain showers in northern and eastern Luzon.

"Meron po tayong hangin na galing dito sa Pacific, which is warm and moist ... Sasalubong ito sa hanging Amihan," she said.

"'Pag nagsalubong, magbabangga, tataas, magkakaroon tayo ng lifting mechanism and then cloud will be formed. More clouds, more rainfall dahil moist po yung hangin natin na galing dito sa Pacific Ocean," she added.

On the other hand, Torpical Depression Onyok has slowed down but it will continue to move west towards the eastern section of Mindanao at 15kph with maximum sustained winds of 55kph, she said. — LBG, GMA News
