Two weeks ago, New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman broke his foot and is expected to be sidelined until the playoffs. In his absence, the rest of the team's receiving corps needs to step up to soften the blow. One of those players supposed to step up was third-year player Aaron Dobson.

Alas, he won't, because his season ended on Monday, when he suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Buffalo Bills. Today, the Patriots have announced that they have officially placed the third-year wide receiver on injured reserve:

The New England Patriots announced that they have signed DB Dewey McDonald to the 53-man roster. In addition, the Patriots placed WR Aaron Dobson on injured reserve.

Dobson was drafted by the Patriots in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After a promising rookie campaign, injuries started to slow him down and he ended both his 2014 and his 2015 campaigns on injured reserve. As it stands right now, Dobson is on his way to join Chad Jackson and Bethel Johnson on the list of disappointing second-round wide receivers drafted by Bill Belichick.

The roster spot opened up by the move was filled by defensive back Dewey McDonald, who was originally claimed off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts on October 28, but released three weeks later. He's back on the team now.
