LOVETT--Lawrence D. Venetian Heritage Inc. and Fondazione Venetian Heritage Onlus mourn the death of its Founding Chairman, Lawrence D. Lovett, who was a distinguished member of the boards for more than 15 years. Larry served in the US Army from 1954-1956. He graduated Harvard College with honors and Harvard Law School in 1954. He began his career as a cargo ship and tanker broker in New York and went on to become VP of Eastern Steamship Lines. He then joined his family companies as President of Burgoyne Properties Company, Suwance Steamship Company and the Piggly Wiggly Corporation simultaneously. Larry was devoted to the arts, primarily the Metropolitan Opera. He served as President of the Board of the Metropolitan Opera Guild from 1971-1979 and Chairman from 1979 to 1986. He was President of the Metropolitan Opera Association Board, Chairman of its Executive Committee and Chairman of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In 1996 he devoted himself to restoration projects in Venice and in 1998 founded Venetian Heritage, raising funds for the preservation of Venetian art and architecture in Venice and those regions of the Mediterranean rim subject to Venetian influence. On behalf of the board, we extend our sincere condolences to his family. We will miss him.
