Game of Thrones’ opening title sequence looks absolutely amazing in 360 degrees

If you thought Game of Thrones’ Emmy-winning credit sequence was epic enough on television, you haven’t seen it in virtual reality. During a session at Facebook’s F8 developer conference in San Francisco, the social network debuted a VR experience based on the epic series’ opening titles.

The 360-degree promo for the upcoming sixth season of Game of Thrones — a collaborative effort between HBO, Facebook, and Elastic, the design firm behind the original sequence — lets viewers pan and zoom around George RR Martin’s fictional world with a mouse and keyboard. As long as you’ve got a compatible Web browser, a decent Internet connection, and modern processor, you can explore a few of Westero’s most recognizable locations — including King’s Landing, Winterfell, the Wall, and Dorne — from incredible new angles.

Perhaps as a result of the video’s platform agnosticism, it’s already achieved an impressive degree of popularity, racking up more than 3 million views in its first few hours availability. If you’d prefer not to watch VR video in a Web browser, though, you needn’t fret — Facebook says versions of the video compatible with Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift will be released soon.

The video coincides with a flood of Game of Thrones material released earlier this week, including an action-packet trailer and three clips featuring a few faces no doubt familiar to fans of the series.

The 360-degree credit sequence isn’t the only VR experience inspired by Game of Thrones. As part of the traveling Game of Thrones in 2014, game developer Framestore worked with HBO and marketing firm Relevent to produce Ascend the Wall, an interactive game for the Oculus Rift that saw users scale the series’ infamous Wall — a 700-foot man-made barrier of snow and ice.

The sixth season of Game of Thrones debuts on April 24.

Venom 3: release date, plot, cast, trailer, and more
Venom in promo art for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

In 2018, Sony Pictures made a bold attempt to keep making Marvel movies without the direct involvement of Marvel Studios. The very first movie in Sony's Spider-Man Universe was Venom, a film based on one of Spidey's greatest villains, who Topher Grace had previously portrayed in 2007's Spider-Man 3. Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) headlined Venom as reporter Eddie Brock and the titular alien symbiote who bonded with him. And unlike Sony's later film, Morbius, Venom was a big hit, earning $856.1 million worldwide.

Hardy reprised his dual roles in 2021's Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which also outperformed expectations at the post-pandemic box office. Later this year, Hardy will once again return as Eddie and Venom in Venom 3: The Last Dance, a film described as the closing chapter in this trilogy. Regardless, Venom 3 may not be the end of the road for Hardy's superhero career, especially after his MCU cameo in 2021. To bring everyone up to speed about the upcoming superhero sequel, we're sharing everything we know about Venom 3.
