Seeking an April 2015 launch date that will coincide with the launch of the next season of Game of Thrones, HBO’s standalone streaming service will be made available to consumers outside of a monthly cable subscription. Hypothetically, subscribers interested in the new season of Game of Thrones will be able to catch up on old seasons as well as watch new episodes of the popular HBO action adventure drama. Of course, HBO hasn’t released any specific details on the cost of subscribing to a standalone service.

Mentioned by Fortune, HBO management also appears to be ditching an internal project that was designed to build this new standalone streaming service in-house. Instead, HBO is cutting a deal with MLB Advanced to build a service that will be able to offer smooth streaming speeds during heavy usage periods. MLB Advanced currently powers premium streaming networks in the sports realm that include MLB.com, the WWE Network, CBS Sportsline’s March Madness on Demand and WatchESPN. Up to this point, HBO has struggled with providing a stable platform for HBO GO, specifically during airings of new Game of Thrones and True Detective episodes.

After the outsourcing news broke earlier today, HBO Chief Technology Officer Otto Berkes announced his resignation from the company. Detailed within an internal memo acquired by Variety, Berkes states “Recently  HBO’s management decided to partner with a third party to assist HBO in bringing our OTT service to market in 2015. This is a change in direction from what I planned with HBO and the approach will not utilize my overall capabilities. Therefore, I feel that this is the right time for me to move on from HBO so that I am able to fully pursue my passion building world-class technology teams, products and businesses.”

It’s likely that HBO will discuss a more detailed timeline of the standalone service product launch as well as details in pricing and content available on the service in the coming months. It’s also possible that announcements related to supported hardware platforms will pop up during CES 2015 next month.

The best Game of Thrones episodes, one year later
how to watch game of thrones online version 1428850821 poster

The final episode of HBO's Game of Thrones aired one year ago this week, bringing an end to a series that ranks among the most popular TV shows of all time.

Game of Thrones' final season may not have lived up to some fans' exceedingly high expectations, but either way, our Sunday nights became a lot more open. We could spend the time watching something else, waiting for George R. R. Martin to finish the books or debate who should've actually become king, but there's really only one way to fill the dragon-sized hole in our hearts: Watch the series again.

Wonder Woman 1984 will mark HBO Max’s 4K HDR debut
Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins took to Twitter yesterday to announce that the movie -- which is slated to launch in theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day -- will be presented in 4K resolution, with Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) and Dolby Atmos surround sound. Ordinarily, this wouldn't be big news. Most of the premier Star Wars and Marvel content on Disney+, for instance, is already available in these formats. But since its launch, HBO Max hasn't released a single title in anything better than full HD resolution, and there haven't been any promises regarding HDR either.

The Wonder Woman sequel will be available in 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10, and Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K, Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, Amazon Fire TV Cube, Chromecast Ultra, AT&T TV and supported Android TV devices.

HBO's stable of apps is getting overhauled following the launch of the HBO Max streaming service, which had resulted in confusion between that app, HBO Go, and HBO Now.

WarnerMedia, the parent company of HBO, said that it will be shutting down HBO Go in the United States, with a plan to remove the app from primary platforms on July 31. HBO Go started 10 years ago as a way for subscribers to stream HBO shows.
