Sleepy Hollow Trustee Bruce Campbell Seeks Re-Election

Campbell, who's retiring in June, will have more time for the Village. "I hope to work hard to make Sleepy Hollow a jewel on the Hudson."

The following announcement is from the Sleepy Hollow Democratic/Responsive Government party:

Sleepy Hollow Trustee Bruce Campbell is seeking re-election, running on the Democratic/Responsive Government ticket in the March 18th Village elections. Campbell was nominated by acclimation at the Democratic party’s open caucus in January. Long time Trustee Karin Wompa heads the ticket, running for Mayor. Jose Chevere and Mary Lindner round out the ticket, running for Trustee.

Campbell says his experience on the Board will be important now that GM is gone and the Lighthouse Landing Development is under way. “Now the real work begins, the work of integrating Lighthouse Landing into the community” he says. Campbell has had meetings with and developed relationships with the project manager and other key players in the development. He has brought together a group including the developer, Scenic Hudson, the County and the Village to make sure that open park space, including River Walk and improvements to Kingsland Park, is included in the development plans. In addition, Campbell sits on the current GM committee and the Board of the Local Development Corporation. “This development can be a tremendous force for good in our village if it is done right. I have been involved in every issue involving GM that has come before the Board in the past six years and am prepared to handle issues moving forward.“

Campbell is currently involved in two other major projects on behalf of the Village. One is working with Tarrytown to study a possible merger of the two Villages’ Parks and Recreation Departments. “Shared services is the only way to hold down taxes without cutting services” he says.

Campbell is also part of a committee looking for a way to reshape the Village’s struggling Ambulance Corps. He says “our corps is dedicated and hard working, but the all volunteer model is very difficult to sustain. We need to find a new way to provide this crucial service.”

As a Board member, Campbell has taken reasonable positions and favored practical solutions. His record includes:

  • Leading a revival of the Village Halloween celebration after the Board cut off funding. Halloween activities have grown in each of the past 4 years, benefitting Village businesses, and resulting in a surge in tourism.
  • Leading various communications initiatives, including an electronic community bulletin board outside Village Hall, Board meetings held in local neighborhoods, 2-minute “summaries” of Board meetings on website and Village channel.
  • Spearheading an overhaul of rules and procedures in Village parks and overhaul of the mission of the Tree Commission.
  • Working with Kendal and local residents to reopen the trail from Birch Close to Rockwood.
  • Beginning the process to create Recreation Advisory Committee

Campbell is proud that during his tenure on the Board he has been an independent voice. He is nothing if not committed to the Village. Once he was called from his hospital bed to break a tie in a budget debate. Campbell also prides himself on being responsive to the needs and requests of his constituents and neighbors.

Campbell plans to retire in June, giving him more time to work for the Village. “I hope to work hard to make Sleepy Hollow a jewel on the Hudson.”
