As Bobbi Kristina Brown clung to life in a medically induced coma, detectives in Atlanta, Georgia, began what was described as a "criminal" inquiry.

They were alerted by medical staff to injuries that appear to have been caused before she was found face down in a half-full bath last weekend.

It was just days before the third anniversary of her mother’s death in similar circumstances.

Police yesterday refused to discuss the nature of the injuries but a spokesman confirmed that if 21-year-old Bobbi Kristina dies, their inquiries could become a murder investigation.

Three years ago the Los Angeles coroner declared a cocaine overdose was a contributory factor in her mother Whitney’s death by drowning in her hotel tub at the age of 48.

Since then, troubled Bobbi Kristina has battled her own demons while failing to launch a showbusiness career after several TV cameo roles.

She underwent a stint in rehab and was photographed two years ago apparently smoking marijuana from a giant pipe during a party.

Family members have been at Bobbi's bedside constantly

Last year she claimed to have married Nick Gordon who was informally adopted by her mother and grew up as her unofficial "half-brother".

Gordon, 24, was in the home they shared when a friend found Bobbi Kristina.

She was not breathing and paramedics estimated her brain was starved of oxygen for five minutes.

Yesterday, the mother of late singer Whitney Houston has flown into Atlanta to attend a bedside vigil for her granddaughter, Bobbi Kristina.

Cissy Houston, 81, joined Bobby Brown and other family members at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

The former gospel singer was seen walking into the hospital, surrounded by by relatives and a bodyguard as she prepared to visit her granddaughter who is said to be still fighting for her life, after the 21-year-old was found unresponsive in the bathtub of her home in Roswell.

It is believed she flew in from her home in New Jersey to join a vigil at her grandaughter's bedside.

Bobbi's cousin, Jerod Brown, previously revealed doctors do not believe Bobbi's condition will improve.

Jerod Brown took to his Instagram page on Thursday to call for prayers for Bobbi, as her father Bobby Brown denied reports that the family is preparing for the worst.

"Though it seems the odds are against her," he wrote, "though doctors don't see any hope for change, though we might want to play detective and find out how she got there, though it looks impossible for her to stand again STILL PRAY FOR BK."
