Little to Show for Hard Work by Harvey School Teams

Harvey's girls varsity team, under new head coach Denis Arnautovic, got in the win column in the first game of the season on Dec. 3.

The following sports wrap up is from The Harvey School:

Cavaliers Struggle to Get Wins on the Ice

It was another unfruitful week for the Harvey varsity hockey team, although the Cavaliers played two quality games, losing 5-4 to King in Stamford during the week and dropping a 6-4 game at home Saturday, Dec. 6.

Harvey worked hard in preparation for a rare Saturday night showdown with Portsmouth Abbey School in Rhode Island, knowing they would have to play their best to compete in this difficult matchup. Early in the first period, senior goalie Mark Siegel was up to the task. Siegel would kick out 23 of the 24 shots he faced to give the Cavaliers a chance. Although the Cavaliers did not score, they created several chances to put the puck in the net.

When the Abbey would take a two-goal lead midway through the second period, Harvey would not give up. Led by the line of Connor Wilson, Theo Rattner and Keith Lambert, the Cavs fought their way back into the game. Lambert, who tipped a shot by sophomore Alex Appel to cut the lead in half, then tied the game on a wrap-around a minute later. Lambert then put the crowd on their feet when he scored his third goal of the period from an outstanding pass by Wilson to give the Cavaliers the lead heading to the third period.

Some undisciplined penalties in the final period cost Harvey the lead and eventually the game. Portsmouth Abbey would score four goals, three on power plays. Wilson would be the only Cavalier to light the lamp in the third period. Abbey outshot Harvey 70-35. Once again Siegel was gallant in defeat, finishing the game with 64 saves.

In their 5-4 loss Wednesday, Dec. 3, the Cavaliers battled King to a scoreless first period, which saw both teams go up and down the ice. The home team Vikings would open the scoring with 7 minutes to play in the second period. They would add another goal just three minutes later. Despite being behind, the Cavaliers controlled play during the period and earned a power play in late moments of the period. Senior forward Thomas Gattuso cut King’s lead in half with a laser wrist shot, but the Vikings added a late goal to make it 3-1 entering the third period.

Harvey came out energized for the final period. Junior Theo Rattner scored two minutes into the period, off a rebound in front of the net. Harvey kept pushing and earned another power play, giving Gattuso a chance to tally his second of the night to knot the game at three, but King surged ahead again, scoring midway through the period. Again, Harvey would answer when Rattner scored his second of the game. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers had used a lot of energy to forge a comeback, and as a result lost their legs over the final six minutes. They began taking costly penalties which gave King a five-on-three. With four minutes to go, King converted the game-winning goal. Siegel made 30 saves for the Cavs, who outshot King 42-35.

Coach Alex Morse said, “This was a difficult loss to swallow, as I felt we carried the play for much of the game.”

After opening their season with a win, the Cavaliers have now dropped six in a row, including the three games they lost in the Thanksgiving holiday tournament.

Cavaliers Wrap Up Hackley Hoops Tourney with Loss

Harvey lost to Pleasantville High School 41-27 Saturday, Dec. 6, in the consolation round of the holiday tournament hosted by The Hackley School in Tarrytown.

Harvey was slow to start in this low scoring matchup. The Cavaliers were getting buried under the boards in the first quarter, giving the Panthers many opportunities to score. With the Pleasantville using a trap press for most of the game, the Cavaliers committed numerous turnovers.

The Cavaliers came out of the intermission determined to shift the momentum their way. The third and fourth quarters were played evenly as Pleasantville outscored Harvey by only one point in the second half.

Harvey coach Dom Narcisco said, “We came out of our halftime meeting with a lot of energy, really showing a lot of hunger and pride. The team was diving for loose balls and really battling for rebounds.”

Junior Rohan Cassells was strong under the boards for Harvey, stepping up in the absence of Jovelle Forsythe and grabbing 14 total rebounds. Harvey had a tough time getting the ball inside as senior point guard Ricky Hicks was held to just four points. Michael DePass led the Cavaliers with 10 points. “It was just one of those days where our good looks outside weren’t falling,” said Coach Narcisco. “We are happy with the team’s effort in the second half and we’re looking forward to getting back to work next week,” said the coach.

In the opening round of the Dan DiVirgilio Memorial Holiday Tournament Thursday, Dec. 4, Harvey lost to Hackley 53-36 in a game that was tight early on as the two teams battled for the lead in the first quarter. The Cavaliers came out hot and with a lot of energy and took a 17-16 lead into the second quarter, but they lost some steam and were out-hustled and out-rebounded for the rest of the game.

Hackley’s Darius Inzar was a force on both sides of the ball and led all scorers with 21 points. For Harvey, senior Ricky Hicks played a nice offensive game, finishing with 15 points. Sasha Kantor chipped in with 11.

Harvey, now 1-2 on the year, tips off against league rival South Kent Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Lady Cavaliers Win Season Opener

Harvey’s girls varsity team, under new head coach Denis Arnautovic, got in the win column in the first game of the season, Wednesday, Dec. 3. The Lady Cavaliers defeated Marvelwood School at home 49-35.

Both teams came out with good energy and ready to play, but many missed layups and open shots made it a low scoring first half. The teams were tied 20-20 at intermission.

In the second half the Lady Cavs showed better focus on offense, moved the ball better and saw their shots start to fall.

Harvey’s pressure on defense stymied Marvelwood’s offense, allowing the Lady Cavs to pull away and control the rest of the game.

Senior forward Ariana Weaver led Harvey with 14 points. Junior guard Jaeden McKenzie collected three assists and grabbed six rebounds. Junior Tessa Knorr and freshman Nikki Johnson each had five steals. Johnson also chipped in with three assists.

Harvey’s Boys JV Off to 0-2 Start

Following a season-opening loss, Harvey’s JV boys team was looking for its first win as the Cavaliers faced Stamford Academy, Friday, Dec. 5, but Harvey lost 66-49.

The game got off to a hot start for Harvey as the Cavaliers responded well from their poor offensive showing in the previous game. It was a back and forth battle against Stamford with Harvey down by three at the half.

Stamford poured on the pressure in the third quarter against the Harvey ball handlers causing fast break opportunities for the speedy Stamford team who built up a 20-point lead. Despite a winning fourth quarter, Harvey could not catch up.

The Cavaliers were led by freshman Oliver Bacon with 12 points and 9 rebounds while sophomore Jason Shi notched his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

In the opening game of the 2014-15 JV basketball season, Harvey lost 48-39 to The Masters School from Dobbs Ferry. This was a tight game early on, as both teams started off slowly and had trouble hitting their shots. Harvey stayed cold as Masters started to heat up. Masters maintained the lead despite a strong fourth quarter from Harvey, and 15 second half fouls.

Boys 3rds Basketball Opens with Loss

On Dec. 3, the boys thirds team (JV-B) fell short in the first game of the season against Oakwood Friends, 44-30. Plagued by excessive turnovers and opening game jitters, the team showed some sparks of brilliance by opening the second half on a 5-0 run.

Victor Mizzaro, Curtis Grellier, and Michael Wilson combined for 22 points in the team’s first outing, while Matt Drude, Anzel Vasquez, Aiden Roberts, and Colin Nardi also got into the scoring column. Leading rebounders were Michael Wilson (6) and Anzel Vasquez (5); Curtis Grellier contributed 5 steals in the losing effort.
