2015 Senior Bowl: Friday Rumor Mill

By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

With all the general managers, coaches and scouts in attendance for the Senior Bowl there is a lot of chatter going around. Here are some of the highlights from the rumormill on day one.

  • The Titans have selected an offensive lineman in the top 12 of the draft in two of the last three drafts, but they are still considering offensive line help in the middle rounds. Sources with the team say that Taylor Lewan really did well when he was healthy, and they fully believe that he’ll develop into a Pro Bowl left tackle. Guard Chance Warmack had a rough first half of the year before playing well down the stretch. Sources say that the change in offense from his first to second year slowed Warmack down in the early going, but in the second half he was playing like the player they believed he could be when they took him in the top 10. Second-year center Brian Schwenke has played well when healthy, but he hasn’t been able to avoid injuries.

Sources say in the mid-rounds and maybe later on the second day Tennessee could look to get help at guard and right tackle. Andy Levitre had a big drop-off in 2014, and Michael Oher wasn’t impressive. Backup Byron Stingily played well when forced into the lineup, and if the Titans are able to bring Stingily back, he could compete with Oher on the right side. There could be move competition coming from the middle rounds.

  • The Broncos have some tough decisions to make with a lot of talented players hitting free agency. Among that group is tight end Julius Thomas, whom many around the league believe is going to get a big pay day. Sources say that Thomas won’t give the Broncos a home team discount, and it looks likely that he’ll be moving on from Denver.

  • Another tight end who will have a lot of suitors if he hits free agency is the Browns’ Jordan Cameron. Cameron, 26, saw his numbers decline in 2014 (48-424-2) from 2013 (80-917-7), but teams feel that was in large part to Cameron missing six games with injuries and the Browns issues’ at quarterback late in the season. Cameron is a true receiving tight end, and he could command a significant pay day, but will probably come cheaper than Thomas. Cleveland may decide to tag Cameron, but if he hits the open market, plenty of teams will be interested.

  • The Buccaneers know they won’t have a shot at him with their pick at No. 34, but Tampa Bay really likes Miami left tackle Ereck Flowers. Flowers hasn’t gotten a lot of media attention, but sources from a number of teams love him and feel he is going to be selected before long on Thursday night.

  • In speaking with evaluators at a variety of teams, you will hear some mixed opinions on Florida State cornerback P.J. Williams. Some teams love Williams’ ability to be a physical press man corner and think that if he runs well, he could be selected in the back half of the first round. Other teams point out that Williams was beat in coverage at times in 2015 and struggles in off man coverage. Some teams have said they have Williams graded firmly in the second round. Williams’ 40 time at the Combine could have a big impact on his draft stock.

  • Sources in San Diego said the Chargers will make it a priority to strengthen the offensive line this offseason. They want to improve the interior of the line and give Philip Rivers better protection. Don’t be surprised if the Chargers target a center like Oregon’s Hroniss Grasu on the second day of the draft. San Diego ran through about five different centers in 2014 and they want a permanent solution. Getting some better blockers on the inside could invigorate their ground game as well.
