17 Reasons Why 2014 Was Kale's Best Year Ever

That's according to the curious data scientists at MyFitnessPal, a nutrition and fitness-logging app, who peeked into their database from the past four years to check out the percentage of foods logged each day that contained the word "kale." They then shared those findings with BuzzFeed Life.

January 6, 2014 was the day MyFitnessPal members logged the most kale. January in general also appears to be a strong kale month year after year, thanks to NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS. The obvious question that remains to be seen: What will January 2015 bring for this cruciferous green? Only time will tell.

People ate 20% more kale on weekdays than on weekends this year according to the same MyFitnessPal data. That's because weekends are for partying, not for kale!

Thanksgiving 2014 is so far the day of lowest kale consumption for the year. Other super low days include July 4, Father's Day, and Mother's Day (and one other holiday... more on that in a minute).

And in 2013, MyFitnessPal members ate 40% less kale on Christmas than they did on the same day a week before. Yes, that's a fact from 2013, but you can expect to see similar kale consumption patterns this year as well.

April 20, 2014, one of our GREAT NATIONAL HOLIDAYS, was the second lowest day of kale consumption for the ENTIRE year (in a three-way tie with July 4th and the day after Thanksgiving).

You know — April 20th. 4/20. The Official Unofficial Smoke Marijuana All Day Long Day.

Kale: You can turn it into chips, but it'll never be a satisfying munchie.

(It should also be noted that 4/20/2014 was also Easter Sunday, which is definitely another holiday. So maybe that was the cause for the drop. You be the judge.)

According to MyFitnessPal data, Kale consumption more than doubled from 2011 to 2012, and more than doubled again from 2012 to 2013. From 2013 to 2014, consumption has grown by 46%. Not as much... but still a lot.
