Harvey (3-6) defeated Archbishop Stepinac Sunday, Dec. 14, 6-3 in a game hosted by the Crusaders at Ebersole Rink in White Plains. It was Harvey’s second win in a row after defeating South Kent 11-6 Wednesday, Dec. 10.

The Cavaliers were sluggish to start the game and were out-hustled during much of the first period. Stepinac got on the board with just over six minutes left in the period. Harvey hockey coach Alex Morse said Stepinac’s goal seemed to wake up his team. “We began to find our game during the remaining minutes of the first,” said Coach Morse. “Defensemen Joe Sorrentino, Alex Appel and Tyler Levy all picked up their skating efforts leading to sharper breakouts for the team,” said the coach.

Harvey evened the score when senior Keith Lambert picked up a goal 90 seconds into the second period. As the Cavaliers began to skate, they forced Stepinac to take penalties during the second period. Harvey scored three consecutive power play goals to take a commanding 4-1 lead. <Captain> Connor Wilson’s goal put Harvey in front and Lambert added two more.

In the final stanza, Stepinac cut the lead to 4-2 before junior Theo Rattner would add his first of the game off a nice feed from Alex Appel. Wilson added a short- handed goal with five minutes left, allowing the Cavaliers some breathing room.

Coach Morse said, “This was a good win for us, but we must continue to focus on our discipline as we head into league play.”

Senior goalie Mark Siegel made 35 saves in the win.

In the win against South Kent on Wednesday, <>the Cavaliers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period and added two goals at the start of the second period to bolster their lead. Senior Keith Lambert (4 goals, 5 assists), Waccabuc’s Theo Rattner (3 goals, 5 assists) and Mount Kisco’s Thomas Gattuso (2 goals, 3 assists) paced Harvey’s attack. Senior Marc Catanese of Goldens Bridge scored his first high school goal and sophomore Kevin Zhang tallied a short-handed goal for his first of the season. Many of the younger players saw significant time at the varsity level.

Coach Morse said, “I was especially proud of the way we conducted ourselves after jumping out to a big lead. Our younger, less experienced players got a lot of ice time. Hopefully this experience helps us as a team during the course of a long season.”

Sophomore goaltender Peter Lombardo made 20 saves in his first extended period of play. Freshmen Kelly McMorrow and Sydney Lunder of South Salem also saw significant playing time. Coach Morse singled out the contributions junior Adam Penino of South Salem and senior Anthony Rusciano made on defense. “They were very effective in their own defensive zone and worked hard to create offensive chances for themselves,” said the coach.

Boys Varsity Enjoys Good Week on the Court

Harvey’s boys varsity basketball team collected two wins last week, the second one a 65-33 victory Friday, Dec. 12, over New York Military Academy. Harvey defeated South Kent 41-35 Wednesday, Dec. 10, in a battle between HVAL opponents.

After losing badly to the NYMA Knights each of the last two years, the Cavaliers went into the game determined to get some payback and that they did.

Harvey was in command for the entire game with a pressure defense that led to many NYMA turnovers and fast-break points for Harvey. Sasha Kantor led Harvey with 22 points while fellow seniors Ricky Hicks had 11, Eamon Murphy added 10 and Jack Mather chipped in with eight. Mather also collected five rebounds and took a charge. NYMA’s Fabio Massa led his team with 21 points and dominated under the boards.

Harvey ‘s coach Dom Narcisco attributes the two-game winning streak to the team’s good approach to practices. “I’m very happy with how the team has been preparing in practice,” said Coach Narcisco. “I am not surprised with the team’s showing the past two games,” he added.

Harvey was short-handed <Friday>, giving Mather and Sam Mackiewicz some extra playing time and a chance to pick up the slack. “Mackiewicz and Mather deserved the minutes and did the job on the court,” said Coach Narcisco.

Harvey (3-2) has one league game this week against Chase and then takes on Briarcliff Friday as part of the Tappan Zee Holiday Tournament.
