Will I see the sun while in Senate detention? Junjun Binay wants to know

Will Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. be able to see the sun when he is detained in the Senate?

This was the question the Makati mayor asked his sister, Senator Nancy Binay, Tuesday morning, a day after the Senate blue ribbon committee cited him in contempt and ordered his arrest and detention for his continued refusal to attend the hearings on the alleged overpriced Makati City Hall Building II.

“Nagkita na kami kaninang umaga, siyempre tinatanong niya sa akin kung may araw ba dun sa tutuluyan nya. Sabi ko wala yatang araw dun,” Nancy told reporters when asked if they were able to discuss the contempt order issued against her brother.

She said her brother also asked her of the status of the contempt order. The Senate had deferred the serving of the arrest and detention order pending clarification on issues surrounding its issuance.

“Kaninang umaga kasi sa amin siya nag-almusal, tinatanong niya ano ba daw yung status ng contempt niya, kung kailangan na ba niyang maghanda kung today na maseserve yung warrant,” Nancy added.

“Sabi ko hintayin muna natin kasi magmi-meeting pa yung committee on rules. So siguro pwede mamayang gabi o bukas,” she added.

Asked if they talked about their options, the senator said they did not.

“I guess pinapabayaan na yung mga lawyers na mag-usap,” she said.

Aside from Binay, City Administrator Eleno Mendoza, Eduviges “Ebeng” Baloloy, former City Administrator Marjorie de Veyra, Engineer Line Dela Peña, and Bernadette Portallano were also cited in contempt.

They said the Senate subcommittee violated their right to due process and even requested for a list of the questions to be asked during the hearing to allow them to prepare beforehand. Such request was denied by the subcommittee. — RSJ, GMA News
