Box office: 'Furious 7' vs. 'Age of Adaline'

Romantic drama The Age of Adaline hits theaters this weekend, but that doesn’t mean Furious 7 is going to get kicked out of the No. 1 spot—especially after the action movie crossed the $1 billion mark in worldwide grosses last week.

Comedy Adult Beginners opens in limited release, and Little Boy is releases wide, but neither are likely going to make the top five. Here’s what might.

1. Furious 7 — $14.6 million

Furious 7 has been following in the footsteps of the previous Furious movies—just on a much larger scale. The past two movies in the franchise decreased by around 50 percent in their fourth weekends, so it’s likely Furious 7 will do the same.

2. The Age of Adaline — $12 million

Starring Blake Lively, The Age of Adaline is a drama focused on a woman who doesn’t age. The last film with Lively in a leading role, 2012’s Savages, opened with $16 million, but this one probably won’t reach those numbers because of its status as a romance coming so soon after another wide-release in the genre, the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Longest Ride. But the immortality aspect does add intrigue, which might drive audiences who were otherwise on the fence to head to theaters. Tracking puts it at about an $11 million debut, but the absence of other new films this week might bring that number up.

3. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 — $11.9 million

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 opened with $23.8 million last weekend—about $8 million less than the original Paul Blart‘s 2009 debut, but considerably more than Here Comes the Boom, which opened with a weak $11.8 million. Despite this perfectly fine debut, the sequel’s not likely to have legs at the box office, mostly because it currently has a 2 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With no positive reviews and a lack of positive word-of-mouth behind it, Paul Blart will probably drop at least 50 percent this weekend, but will continue to receive support from comedy fans who don’t care what the critics think.

4. Unfriended — $8.5 million

Low-budget horror thriller Unfriended opened with $15.8 million last weekend, and might follow in the steps of Ouija—another recent horror film made by the same production company. That would mean a drop of around 45 percent in its second weekend.

5. Home —$6.4 million

Dreamworks’ Home has been having a good time at the box office, and it should remain in the top five in its fifth week. It has dropped an average of 40 pecent each week since it hit theaters, so it should continue that pattern this weekend.
