CAAP sets more no-fly zones during papal visit

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has set additional no-fly zones for Pope Francis' visit from Jan. 15 to 19.

On its Twitter account on Monday, the CAAP specified no-fly zones of three nautical miles over Malacañang, Mall of Asia, Manila Cathedral and Apostolic Nunciature.

Combined with an earlier Notice to Airmen, the list of no-fly zones will now include:

Jan. 15: NAIA

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport primary runway 06/24 and secondary runway 13/31 will be closed for all arriving flights.

From 2 to 5:15 p.m. and 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., NAIA will be closed to arriving aircraft. Only departures are allowed.

Pope Francis' aircraft is scheduled to arrive at about 5:45 p.m.

Jan. 15-16: Apostolic Nunciature

From 5 p.m. of Jan. 15 to 9 a.m. of Jan. 16, a no-fly zone of three nautical miles will be enforced over the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila.

Jan. 16: Parts of Metro Manila

8:15 to 11:15 a.m. — a three-nautical mile no-fly zone over Malacañang.

10:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. — a three-nautical mile no-fly zone at Manila Cathedral.

4:30 to 8:30 p.m. — three-nautical mile no-fly zone over SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Jan. 17: NAIA, Tacloban Airport

When Pope Francis flies to Tacloban, the Daniel Z. Romualdez (Tacloban) Airport will be closed to all air traffic from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Exempted will be aircraft that carries the papal entourage.

NAIA runways will be closed from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. and from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. when the Pope's aircraft lands at NAIA from Tacloban.

Jan. 19: NAIA

During the Pope's departure to Rome, NAIA runway will only allow departing aircraft from 6 to 9:30 a.m.

A no-fly zone will be in effect from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., where a Philippine Airlines flight will carry the Pope back to Rome. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
