Earlier this year, rumors of Samsung working on its own line of mobile graphics processors surfaced out of Korea, indicating the company was ready to do more than just design custom mobile CPUs. Now, a new report by ZDNet Korea is suggesting that Samsung is making headway into the GPU's development and could announce it by mid-2015 and possibly have it ready for use by the time the Galaxy Note 5 (or whatever the next Galaxy Note flagship is called) comes along.

At the moment, Samsung's Exynos chips ARM's Cortex cores and ARM's Mali line of GPUs, putting it behind Qualcomm, PowerVR and ARM in the mobile GPU market. Samsung's own GPU will likely be a part of the next major Exynos iteration, which will surely also be a 64-bit chip. Developing its own GPU will help the Korean manufacturer further differentiate its devices from the competition, though it remains to be seen if Samsung's in-house graphics processor will indeed be ready by next year (and whether it will be safe from lawsuits by Nvidia, which has already sued Samsung for infringing on its GPU patents.)
