Meanwhile, China welcomes Pak Army chief who claims India ‘subverts’ via Afghanistan
China called Pakistan an “irreplaceable” all-weather friend and pledged full support to it.
Amid the high-profile visit of US President Barack Obama to India, China on Monday called Pakistan an “irreplaceable” all-weather friend and pledged full support to it.
The comments came as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other leaders met visiting Pakistani Army chief General Raheel Sharif.
According to Pakistan Army spokesman Asim Bajwa, the Chinese minister told Sharif, “Pakistan is China’s irreplaceable all-weather friend and both countries are part of community of shared destiny.”
Gen Sharif’s visit to China comes as Obama warmed up to India with a second visit. Pakistan is under pressure from both India and the US on the issue of terrorism, with calls to impose a complete ban on JuD and its chief, Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed.
Meanwhile, a Pakistani parliamentary committee was informed on Monday that Gen Sharif presented evidence to American officials during his US visit last year on India’s alleged involvement in terrorism in the country using Afghan soil.
Defence Secretary Lt Gen Alam Khattak told the Senate Defence Committee in Islamabad that Gen Sharif presented vital evidence of “Indian involvement in subversive activities in Pakistan using the soil of Afghanistan”.
India has rubbished Pakistan’s allegation that it was fomenting terrorism in the country from Afghanistan.
The US side was also asked to take action against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Mullah Fazlullah allegedly hiding in Afghanistan. Gen Sharif was reportedly assured that the Taliban chief would be either arrested or killed in Afghanistan.
The US also agreed to provide $1 billion this year under the Coalition Support Fund. The committee was told that the US would give Pakistan used defence equipment to meet its security challenges, for which the process had already begun.
Gen Sharif is currently on a two-day visit to China, where he also met Chairman of the People’s Conference Yu Zhengsheng and senior leader Meng Jianzhu. Meng assured that “China has consistent policy beyond individuals” and “Pak concern is China’s concern”, tweeted Bajwa.
Yu Zhengsheng said that Pakistan has always stood by China and termed it as its “most reliable partner”. The Chinese government and the people will help Pakistan in all respects, he said.
Yesterday, Gen Sharif met his Chinese counterpart Gen Qi Jianguo at the People’s Liberation Army Headquarters and held talks with him.
